Hello! It has gotten really hot in Japan! I am from the South in the US and it gets hot, but nothing really prepares for how intense it can be! The weather is always a common topic of small talk, so today I would like to give you some expressions to talk about hot weather.

こんにちは！

最近は本当に暑くなりましたね！

私はアメリカの南部出身ですけど、

毎年の夏はなかなか心の準備ができないみたいですね。

天気はいつも話題としてよく使えるので、

今日は暑い天気について話すための表現を教えたいと思います。

Sentence 1: It’s as hot as an oven in here! 　
センテンス１：　ここはオーブンほど暑いですね！

Sentence 2: It’s not the heat. It’s the humidity!

センテンス２：　暑さじゃないですよ。湿気ですよ！

Sentence 3: What do you do to stay cool in the summer?

センテンス３：　夏はどうしたら涼しく過ごせますか？

Sentence 1 could be used when you walk into a room which is very hot. Sentence 2 means that even if the temperature is not extremely hot, high humidity can make it feel very hot. Sentence 3 would make an interesting conversation starter during the summer time in Japan. I hope you all find a way to stay cool! Personally I am going to stay in the shade!

暑い部屋に入った時にセンテンス１を使ってみてください。

センテンス２はちょっとわかりにくいかもしれません。

Sentence 1: Tomorrow should be a good day to hang out the wash.　

センテンス１：　明日は洗濯物を干すのにいい日になりそうです。

Sentence 2: Who does the cooking at your house?　

センテンス２：　あなたの家でだれがご飯作っていますか？

Sentence 3: Housework just seems endless, doesn’t it?!

センテンス３：　家事は本当にきりがないんでしょうね！

Sentence 1 could be used to tell someone that the forecast is for sunny weather the next day. Weather is always a good conversation starter. Use Sentence 2 to ask someone who is living with someone if they cook or not. I think that Sentence 3 is a sentiment that anyone who does housework can share. If you talk to your foreign friends, you may find some differences in the way that people do housework so give it a try!

Hello! Recently, I was thinking that it can be difficult to keep a conversation going with someone who you meet for the first time. In those cases there are some general questions you can ask people about what they do in their free time. Let me give you some examples.

こんにちは！

初めて会う人とはなかなか会話を持ち運ぶことが難しいと思います。

その時にいくつかの表現を使えば、人の暇な時間の過ごし方について聞くことがお勧めです。

では、今日の表現を紹介しましょう！

Sentence 1: What do you do in your free time?

センテンス１：　暇な時間は何をしていますか？

Sentence 2: How do you like to kill time?

センテンス２：　時間はどういうふうに潰すのが好きですか？

Sentence 3: How do you spend Sunday afternoons?

センテンス３：　日曜日の昼は大体どういうふうに過ごしていますか？

Sentence 1 may seem very easy at first, but I think that the use of the preposition “in” here is not so easy for Japanese speakers of English. In Sentence 2 there is a good example of an idiom in that we use the verb “kill” to mean finding something to do when there is nothing that you have to do. In Sentence 3 the verb “spend” is the basic expression for talking about how people use time. You can ask about someone’s habits by putting the time in the plural like the noun “afternoons” here. Notice that “Sunday” does not become plural in this case. So, I hope these expressions make you a better conversationalist. Try them and see how it goes!

最初に見るとセンテンス１は簡単に見えるかもしれませんが、

日本人にとってこの前置詞の「in」の使い方は結構難しいと思います。

センテンス２のイディオムの「kill」というのはここで時間を「潰す」という意味になります。

時間を「過ごす」という意味で英語では大体「spend」という動詞を使います。

だれかの習慣的な行動について聞くのに、複数形を使えばいいです。

例えば、ここで「昼」の「afternoon」を複数にします。

日曜日は複数にならないことに注目してください。

この表現によってあなたの会話術が上がればいいと思います。

Sentence 1: Where do you like to go out in Tokyo?

Sentence 3: Do you have any favorite places in Kichijoji?

Sentence 1 is our first question which we can ask to learn what area in a city someone likes. Then you can follow that with Sentence 2 to ask about what is fun to do in that area. Please notice the use of “in” for areas. Finally, you can ask about stores, restaurants, or any other place in that area. I think it is a lot of fun to ask people who know a lot about an area to get insider’s information on the best places. Try out these questions and I think you will find that you can follow them up with other questions to have an interesting conversation.

センテンス１を使えばだれかの町の好きな場所を聞くことが出来ます。

それを聞いてからセンテンス２を使えば、

その地域のいいところを聞けばいいと思います。

Hello! Recently, I am planning a party in Tokyo with some fellow alumni of my graduate school. All of them have lived in the US and some of them for a long time, but it is surprising that some people can live in a foreign country without really learning how to communicate politely in that culture. So, today I would like to give you some expressions for politely expressing a different opinion. Here you go!

こんにちは！

最近、大学院の同窓会を東京で開催する予定をいろいろな人と予定を立てています。

みんなアメリカの大学院卒なので、全員長い間アメリカに住んだことあるのですが、

その中でもそんな経験があってもあまり丁寧にコミュニケーションが取れない人もいます。

今日は、丁寧に反対の意見を表すための表現を紹介したいと思います。

では、見てみましょう！

Sentence 1: That is a nice restaurant, but the service is not so good.

センテンス１：　そこはいいレストランだけど、サービスはあまりよくないです。

Sentence 2: Although many people prefer to meet in Shinjuku, I think it might be too crowded on Saturday.

センテンス２：　皆は新宿で会うのが都合がいいでしょうが、土曜日はとっても混んでいると思います。

Sentence 3: That would be a great place to eat, but it might be hard to talk since it is loud.

センテンス３：　そこは、食事をするのにいい場所ですが、ちょっとうるさいからあまりお話ができないかもしれません。

The key to all of these expressions is that you should say something agreeing with the other person’s opinion before you introduce an opposite opinion. Notice that here you can use conjunctions such as “but” and “although.” Using the conditional “would” in Sentence 3 also helps to soften your statement. So, please remember that while American may be very open in the way they communicate, we still try to be considerate of other people’s feelings.

この三つの表現のポイントはまず賛成することです。

その後は反対の意見を入れてもいいです。

その前に接続詞の「but」と「although」が使えます。

センテンス３では仮定法の「would」を使うことによってこの表現が軟らかくなってきます。

アメリカ人は結構オープンに話すというイメージは強いが、

それにしても相手の気持ちを考えるというこもします。

Hello “Talklers”! Today I am writing to you from Bangkok, Thailand.
I am meeting with some experts on literacy education here before I leave for my research trip to Cambodia.
As I arrived in the airport yesterday, I realized how stressful it can be to arrive in a new city and try to get settled.
A good place to start is with airport information.
You may be able to use Japanese, but there are probably some countries where you can’t, so you should practice your English.
Today, I want to give you some questions to ask at the airport information counter.
So, here they are!

Use Sentence 1 to ask about the best mode of transportation.
In Sentence 2 we have the modal verb “should” because in Thailand you can negotiate for the price of the taxi fare.
Finally, Sentence 3 is useful to ask about things in close proximity to a hotel or other destination.

センテンス１では、一番いい交通の手段を聞いています。

センテンス２では、助動詞の「should」を用いて、「いくら払えばいいか？」と聞いています。

なぜならタイでは、タクシー料金が交渉可能だからです。

最後のセンテンス３では、ホテルや他のもののがホテルのそばにあるかどうかを聞くのに便利です。

Lastly, I would like you to imagine that you are the information person.
Think of some landmarks in Tokyo and how you would answer these questions.

The first sentence is the first question you will be asked by a clerk who offers you help.
Feel free to refuse the second question as clerks just ask this to encourage you to buy things.

Today I would like to give you the basic expression for paying for things.
There are three methods for paying for things and I will give you a sentence for each of those.

今日は、代金の支払いに関しての基本的な表現をお教えしたいと思います。

Sentence 1: Can I pay with traveler’s checks?

Of course cash is accepted almost anywhere but sometimes you should check.

アメリカの若者の愛情表現

Hello! Even though Valentine’s Day has come and gone, it is never too late for romance! Therefore, today I would like to teach you some expressions that young Americans use to ask someone to go out with you. The first two expressions are expressions which are specifically used on Valentine’s Day.

こんにちは！

バレンタインデーは終わってしまったが、

ロマンスの季節は終わりません。

ということで、今日はアメリカの若者が告白する時に使う表現を紹介したいと思います。

センテンス１と２は特にバレンタインデーに使われます。

Sentence 1: Be my valentine.

センテンス１：　私のバレンタインになってください。
　　　　　　　　（私の特別な人になってください）

Sentence 2: Be mine.

センテンス２：　私のものになってください。

Sentence 3: Will you be my girlfriend?

センテンス３：　私のガールフレンドになってくれない？

Sentence 4: Will you go out with me?

センテンス４：　私と付き合ってくれない？

Sentences 1 and 2 are in imperative form using the verb “be.” “Valentine” in Sentence 1 means “girlfriend” or “boyfriend.” Sentences 3 and 4 are both sentences and mean the same thing. The phrasal verb “to go out with (someone)” means to have a relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend. Please be aware that Sentences 1 and 2 are kind of old-fashioned and should be used in a light-hearted way. Sentences 3 and 4 are the sentences that American junior high school students would use. Later in high school or college they sound childish. So, that’s it for our lesson on expressions for young love in America! I hope you enjoyed it!

文脈によってこの「may」という動詞は「can」という意味もあるし

In Sentence 2 the meaning is “might” as in “there is a chance.” Usually based on the context you can understand which meaning is being used. But, it is good to become familiar with both meanings. Listen carefully and think about the possible meanings. I am sure you will come to understand after awhile.

センテンス２ではこの意味は「」になっているので、

その可能性があるという意味になります。

大体は文脈によて意味がわかってくると思います。

しかし、まず両方の意味を知ることが大事です。

Hello! Today I would like to teach you some expressions for encouraging your friends. When time’s get bad for people sometimes a few words of encouragement are all you need to do to give someone that little bit of confidence to keep pushing forward.

こんにちは！

今日は友達を励ますための表現を教えたいと思います。

不運なことがおきたときなどには励ましの言葉を少し言って上げれば、

辛い時期を乗り越えるが出来ます。

Sentence 1: I believe in you.

センテンス１：　私はあなたを信じています。

Sentence 2: I have faith in you.

センテンス２：　私はあなたに信頼があります。

Sentence 3: I have the utmost degree of confidence in you.

センテンス３：　私はあなたに最大の自信があります。

Sentences 1 and 2 express about the same degree of confidence in someone’s ability to get some work done. Sentence 3 is a more difficult expression and expresses the highest level of confidence. Whichever expression you use I am sure that your friend will appreciate the words of encouragement. So, be a good friend and help that special person get past the difficult times.

Hello! Today I would like to teach you some more grammar to guess the meaning of expressions. We will be talking about the same expression which we learned in our last lesson on February 2nd which is presented below.

今日は表現の意味を推測するための別の言葉を紹介したいと思います。

今回も下に書いてある２月２日の例文を使います。

Sentence A: Herman was fuming after you told him you couldn’t go see a movie with him.

センテンスA：　あなたがハーマンに一緒に映画を見に行けないと言ってから、彼はプンプン怒っています。

Do you know the meaning of “fuming” in this sentence? Well, you can use the following adverbs to guess at the meaning.

センテンスAの中の「fuming」という言葉はご存知ですか？次の表現の副詞を使えば意味を聞くことが出来ます。

Sentence 1: Maybe it means “sad.”

センテンス１：　もしかしたら「sad」という意味です。

Sentence 2: It possibly means “busy.”

センテンス２：　「busy」という意味は可能かもしれません。

Sentence 3: It definitely means “angry.”

センテンス３：　それは絶対に「angry」という意味です。

Sentences 1 and 2 express the same degree of certainty in guessing the meaning which is around 30% or so. Sentence 3 expresses a very high degree of certainty at close to 100%. And, actually Sentence 3 is the correct meaning. Also use these expressions with adverbs to check meanings with a native speaker friend. So, once again, don’t be afraid to take a stab at what might be the correct meaning!

センテンス１と２は意見の自信度が同じく３０％ぐらいだと思います。

それに比べて、センテンス３の自信度はかなり高く、９０％ぐらいだと思います。

そして、実はセンテンス３の推測が正しいです。

Hello! Today I would like to teach you some grammar to guess the meaning of expressions. In learning a foreign language we should never underestimate the power of guessing. It is always necessary when we come across some expression which we don’t know. For example, let’s say you heard the following expression.

こんにちは！

今日は表現の意味を推測するための言葉を紹介したいと思います。

外国語を習うと推測力の役割を軽視してはいけません。

知らない言葉と出会った時には大変必要になってきます。

例えば次の発言を聞いみてください？

Sentence A: Herman was fuming after you told him you couldn’t go see a movie with him.

Do you know the meaning of “fuming” in this sentence? Well, you can use the following modal verbs to guess at the meaning.

センテンスAの中の「fuming」という言葉はご存知ですか？次の表現の助動詞を使えば意味を聞くことが出来ます。

Sentence 1: It might mean “sad.”

センテンス１：　それは「sad」という意味かもしれません。

Sentence 2: It could mean “busy.”

センテンス２：　それは「busy」という意味かもしれません。

Sentence 3: It must mean “angry.”

センテンス３：　それはきっと「angry」という意味です。

Sentences 1 and 2 express the same degree of certainty in guessing the meaning which is around 30% or so. Sentence 3 expresses a very high degree of certainty at around 90%. And, actually Sentence 3 is the correct meaning. “Fuming” comes from the word “fume” used for “gas” and expresses the idea of someone being so mad that steam seems to come off his/her body. These expressions are a good way to check meanings with a native speaker friend. So, don’t be afraid to take a stab at what might be the correct meaning!

センテンス１と２は意見の自信度が同じく３０％ぐらいだと思います。

それに比べて、センテンス３の自信度はかなり高く、９０％ぐらいだと思います。

そして、実はセンテンス３の推測が正しいです。

「fuming」という単語はガスの「fume」の動詞から来て、
だれかが非常に怒っていて、その人の体から湯気が出るぐらいの怒りです。

今日の表現を使えばネイティブの友達に言葉の意味のチェックが出来ると思います。

共通点―友達の絆

Hello! Today I would like to explain some grammar which is used to express the same opinions as someone you are talking to. I am sure that most of you are familiar with the expression “me, too” but there are many other expressions which you can use to express more interest. I will present the two basic expressions for agreeing with affirmative and negative statements.

こんにちは！今日は話し手と同じ意見を表すための表現を説明したいと思います。

皆さんは「me, too」という表現はよくご存知だと思いますが、

他にもっと感情が入った表現が使えると思います。

肯定文と否定文の発言に対する基本的な答えを紹介します。

Conversation 1

A: I like Vietnamese food a lot.

B: So do I!

会話１

A: 私はベトナム料理がとっても好きです。

B: 私もそうです！

Conversation 2

A: I don’t like jogging.

B: Neither do I.>

会話２

A:　私はジョギングが好きじゃないです。

B:　私もそうです！

Notice that in response to most verbs you can use the general helping verb “do.” In future lessons I will address the use of other modal verbs. Notice that “neither” is substituted for the adverb “so” to respond to a negative sentence. In this lesson pay particular attention to the use of intonation to express surprise at a shared opinion. I hope you will find these expressions helpful to you to make more foreign friends.

一般の動詞に対して助動詞の「do」を使ったら良いです。こんどのレッスンの時に他の助動詞への対応について説明します。否定文の場合は「so」の代わりに「neither」を入れます。この例文を聞いた時にイントネーションに注目してください。この表現を使ってもっと外国人の友達が作れるといいですね！

Whenever I go back to Atlanta, where my family lives, I enjoy reading “The Best of Atlanta” edition of the Creative Loafing city guide. It is a lot of fun to go to the places with the best barbecue, blues music, or stand-up comedy. So, use these expressions on your next trip with the hotel staff or the concierge.

Sentence 1: What is the best Chinese restaurant in New York?

センテンス１：　ニューヨークの一番いい中華料理屋はどこですか？

Sentence 2: Where can I go to buy the best cheesecake in New York?

センテンス２：　ニューヨークの一番いいチーズケーキはどこで買えますか？

Sentences 1 and 2 are simply different ways of asking for the best that a city has to offer. Guide books and the Internet can be useful, but asking the locals is always the best strategy. So, don’t be afraid to start a conversation and seek out the best of the best!

センテンス１とセンテンス２のファンクションは同じですが、

言い方が違います。

二つ共使えば町の一番いい店が見つけられると思います。

ガイドブックやインターネットを使うのもいいですが、

やはり現地の人々に聞いたほうがベストですね。

英語の会話を怖がらないで、現地の人に声をかけ、

その町のベストの物を探してみてください！

雪の英語

Hello! Hasn’t the snow been wonderful? I grew up in the South in the US, so I did not get a chance to play with snow much growing up. For that reason I am really glad that my son has the chance to enjoy an occasional snowfall in Tokyo. Today, I would like to tell you some expressions we can use to show how we enjoy snow in the winter. Here they are!

こんにちは！

雪は素晴らしいです！

私はアメリカの南部生まれだから子どもの時はあまり雪で遊べなかったです。

だから、私の息子は東京で雪で遊ぶことができるというのはとっても嬉しいですね。

冬に雪をエンジョイすることを表すための表現を紹介したいと思います。

Sentence 1: We had a snowball fight this morning.

センテンス１:　私たちは今朝雪合戦をしていました。

Sentence 2: We made a snowman in our backyard.

センテンス２:　 私たちは裏庭で雪だるまを作りました。

Sentence3: We lay down on the snow and made snow angels.

センテンス３：　私たちは雪の上で寝転んで「雪の天使」を作りました。

These are all common activities in the US when it snows. I think that everyone is familiar with snowmen and making snowballs to have “snowball fights.” We make a “snow angel” by lying down in snow and moving our arms up and down to brush away the snow thus making a shape resembling an angel’s wings. Please notice what verbs we use in each sentence. Enjoy the snow before it melts! Something about snow brings out the kid in all of us, doesn’t it?

アメリカで雪が降ったらこういう遊びはよくします。

日本では雪だるまや雪合戦のことはよく知っていると思います。

「雪の天使」に関してですが、雪の上で寝転んで、両腕をバタバタ上と下にすれば、天使の翼みたいな形が作れます。

各文書に使われている動詞に注目してください。

風邪の治療―Cold Remedies

Hello! Today I would like to continue with the theme of dealing with illnesses and especially the common cold. I will present you with some expressions for giving advice on how to treat yourself for a cold. So, let’s look at the expressions.

こんにちは！

今日も健康問題というテーマを続けようと思います。

今回は風邪にフォーカスして、お医者さんのオフィス訪ねないで自己治療を進めるための表現を紹介したいです。

さて、今週の表現を読んでみましょう。

Sentence 1: It’s important to eat some soup with a lot of garlic.

センテンス１:　にんにくがたくさん入ったスープを飲むことが大事です。

Sentence 2: It’s sometimes helpful to take a hot bath.

センテンス２:　 温かいお風呂に入るのもたまにいいことです。

Sentence3: It’s a good idea to wrap a towel around your neck before you go to sleep.

センテンス３：　寝る前に首にタオルを巻いたほうがいい考えです。

In all of these examples we use the infinitive which is the verb preceded by the preposition “to.” Before the infinitive you can use a complete sentence with an adjective or a noun.

ここの例文は全部前置詞の「to」プラス動詞という形を使っています。

そこの前に形容詞や名詞が入った完成した文書が書けます。

Sometimes you meet people with very interesting cold remedies. The first two which I have presented to you are not so unusual, but the third is my own invention. I think it helps to keep your throat warm especially if you have a sore throat. So, try these remedies and share your remedies with your foreign friends.

時々とっても面白い風邪治療を知っている人に会いますね。

センテンス１とセンテンス２の治療方法は珍しくないと思うけど、センテンス３は自分が作りました。

Hello! Today I want to teach you some expressions to use if you have to see a doctor in a foreign country when you are on vacation. The past Christmas vacation my family stayed healthy for our entire stay, but in past years we have gotten sick and had to visit doctors while we were in the US on vacation. At those times it is important that you have a few basic expressions to explain your condition. Today I would like to give you a couple of expressions to describe pain.

今日は旅行の時にお医者さんと話す時に使える表現を教えたいと思います。

この前のクリスマス休みの時にアメリカにいる間に私の家族は全員元気だったんですが、前のクリスマス休みの時は病気になってお医者さんのオフィスを訪ねることがありました。

その時に自分の症状を簡単に説明するための表現を知っていればいいと思います。そのために今日は体の痛みを説明するための表現を紹介します。

Sentence 1: My throat hurts.

センテンス１：　私の喉が痛いです。

Sentence 2: I have pain in my knee.

センテンス２：　私のヒザに痛みがあります。

Sentences 1 and 2 are simply different ways to say the same thing. It is important that you can tell the doctor the location of pain. You can use the verb “to hurt” in Sentence 1 after the body part. Or, in Sentence 2 you can use the noun “pain” and describe the location in a prepositional phrase.

センテンス１とセンテンス２のファンクションは同じですが、言い方が違います。

お医者さんに痛んでいる場所を教えることができるというのは非常に大事だと思います。

センテンス１では痛んでいる体の部分を主語にして、その後に動詞の「hurt」を使えばいいです。

センテンス２では動詞を「have」にして、目的語が名詞の「pain」になって、痛みの場所が前置詞の後に来ます。

My hope is that you will never have to use these phrases. But, it is important that you know them if you need them.

もちろん、旅行先で病気にならなくて、この表現を使うチャンスが来ないというのを望んでいるのですが、それにしても知っておいたほうがいいと思います。

Hello! I returned from a long trip to the US which was wonderful since I was able to spend a lot of time with my family. Even though I travel home at least once a year, it is always a stressful time. So, I would like to give you some expressions for giving advice and reminding people of things to do in preparation for travel.

こんにちは！アメリカの長い旅から帰って来ました。

いっぱい家族と時間を過ごせたから、とってもいい旅でした。

毎年アメリカに帰るんですけど、やはり海外旅行するとストレスを感じますね。

今日は海外旅行する時に忘れものをしないためにいろいろな表現を紹介したいと思います。

Sentence 1: Be sure to bring your passport!

センテンス１：パスポートを必ず持って行くこと！

Sentence 2: Don’t forget to bring your medicine!

センテンス２：自分の薬を持って行くのを忘れないでね！

I hope you find these expressions useful. And, I hope that your future travel is smooth and trouble-free! We usually say “Bon Voyage!” to someone before they leave for a trip which means “Good trip” in French, so I would like to end with that expression.

海外旅行先で日本について話す

Hello! Today I met one of my mother’s neighbors, a Greek furniture craftsman who is hearing impaired. It was amazing to me the degree to which we could communicate using body language and facial expressions, although we did communicate primarily by writing our conversation on a piece of paper. Naturally the fact that I live in Japan became a topic of conversation. Starting a conversation with “Where are you from?” is very common when on vacation, so I would like to present you with some questions to ask the person who may be curious to know more about Japan.

みなさんこんにちは！　

私は今日、母親の家の近所に住むギリシャ人で、聴力に障害を持つ職人さんに会いました。

彼とコミュニケーションは、基本的には紙に文字を書いてやりとりをしていたんですが、ボディ・ランゲージや顔の表情で意思が通じることにびっくりしました。

当然のことですが、私が日本に住んでいることが話題になりました。

旅行中の会話のスタートとしては、Where are you from?は、もっとも一般的なものです。

そこで、今日はみなさんに、日本について関心を持ってくれそうな人への質問の例を用意しました。

Sentence 1: Have you ever been to Japan?

日本に行ったことはありますか？

Sentence 2: Have you seen “Memoirs of a Geisha”?

映画「さゆりMemoires of a Geisha」を見たことがありますか？

Sentence 3: You should visit the Gion District in Kyoto to see a real geisha.

本物の芸者に会うには京都の祇園にいくといいですよ。

Sentence 4: Gion is the area where most geisha live in Kyoto.

京都の芸者のほとんどは祇園に住んでいます。

Notice that in Sentence 1 and 2 we use perfect aspect to talk about experiences. This is formed by using the verb “have” followed by the past participle of the main verb. For a sentence such as Sentence 1 we rarely use “gone” to ask about visiting a place. Instead it is common practice to use “been.” “Memoirs of a Geisha” is the English title for the movie “Sayuri” in Japan which was written by a Japan scholar in the US and is playing in both the US and Japan at present. It is a good idea to follow up your question about experiences with a recommendation and explanation as are found in Sentence 3 and 4 respectively.

センテンス１と２は、経験を示す完了形を使っています。

動詞のhaveのあとに動詞の完了形をつけて言います。

センテンス１のような場合ですが、ある場所に「行ったことがある」と言いたい場合は「行く」のgoは使わず、「いる」の完了形beenを使います。

”Memoir of a Geisha”は映画「さゆり」の英語のタイトルです。

ベースになった小説はアメリカの日本研究者によって書かれたもので、現在日米両方で上映されています。

センテンス３や４の表現を使って、経験をたずねたり、アドバイスをしてみたりするのもいいですよ。

Going on a vacation is a great opportunity to practice your English. There is no substitute for being in a native English-speaking environment, so make sure to listen carefully to what people are saying around you even if you understand only a small percentage. This effort will pay off huge dividends for your language study. Think of the effort that my Greek friend had to expend to learn English and that should provide you with some inspiration.

休暇で外国へ行くのは英語を勉強するのに大変よい機会になります。

実際にネイティブが話す環境に勝るものはありません。

たとえ少ししか理解できなくても、周りの人々が話すことに注意して耳をかたむけてみましょう。

新年の抱負

Hello! Well, here we are in 2006. In the US this is the time to make New Year’s resolutions. A “resolution” is a promise to yourself to do something. Usually, we make resolutions to improve ourselves for the new year in the US. Let me present a question for asking about resolutions and two expressions to explain resolutions.

みなさん、こんにちは！　

さあ2006年の始まりです。

アメリカでは、正月は新年の新たな抱負を語るときなのです。

Resolution（抱負、決意）というのは、何かをしようと自分自身に約束することです。

新しい年の始まりにあたり、自分を向上させるために決意するのです。

新たな抱負のたずね方と、抱負を説明する表現を紹介します。

Sentence 1: What is your New Year’s resolution?

新年の抱負はなんですか？

Sentence 2: I am going to go jogging three times a week .

週に３回ジョギングをしようと思います。

Sentence 3: I promised myself that I will quit smoking.

タバコをやめようと自分自身に約束しました。

Sentence 1 is the standard expression which we use to ask about resolutions. In Sentence 2, we use future form with “going to” followed by the verb “go” in this case. Please do not be confused by the use of “go” two times in this sentence. The first usage simply serves to express the future tense. Sentence 3 is a little more advanced structure. For Sentence 3 we use a reflexive form with the reflexive pronoun “myself” and the future tense with “will” to express a plan for the future.

１番目のセンテンスは、抱負についてたずねる一般的な表現です。

２番目は、going toという未来を現す表現形式にgoという動詞をつなげたものです。

”go”が２つあることで混同しないでください。

最初のgoingは、単なる未来形のbe going toのgoです。

３番目のセンテンスは、少し上級の使い方で、再帰代名詞myselfと未来を示すwillを使った表現形式です。

Since, I am bringing up resolutions I should confess my own. I got a tennis racquet for Christmas and I am going to play tennis on the morning of January 1st!

抱負の話ですので、私自身の抱負を白状しなければなりませんね。

実はクリスマスプレゼントにテニスのラケットをもらったので、１月１日の朝からテニスのをやろうと思っています。

買い物の英語を簡単に

Hello! My family has enjoyed a relaxing Christmas holiday here in the US, and we have taken advantage of the “after-Christmas sales.” In doing so, I have been observing what expressions we use when we are shopping. Today I would like to present one expression to you which you can use to ask for an item in a different color or size. The basic expression is: “Do you have this in…?” Let’s take a look at the sentences!

みなさんこんにちは！　

私は家族と一緒にアメリカでのクリスマス休暇を楽しんでいます。

ここではアフター・クリスマス・セールの恩恵にもあずかっています。

私は買い物をしながら、こちらではどんな表現を使うかを観察していました。

そこで、今日は、買い物でサイズや色をたずねるときの表現をご紹介しましょう。

基本はこの商品で○○はありますか？　

Do you have….?です。

Sentence 1: Do you have this in an extra small?

これでエクストラ・スモールはありますか？

Sentence 2: Do you have this in a size 6?

この商品でサイズ６はありますか？

Sentence 3: Do you have this in black?

これで黒はありますか？

Notice that in Sentence 1 the size below “Small” or “S” is an “XS” or “Extra Small.” In the same way the size above an “L” or “Large” is an “XL” or “Extra Large.” Above that comes “XXL” and so on. In Sentence 2 we are asking for a different size of shoe, and notice that we say the number for the size after the word “size.” Also, notice that in both Sentence 1 and Sentence 2 we use the indefinite article “a” or “an” before the size. For color we do not use an article and simply say the name of the color after the preposition “in.”

センテンス１で、スモールやＳの下はエクストラ・スモールあるいはＸＳです。

同じように、Ｌの上はＸＬあるいはエクストラ・ラージです。

その上にはＸＸＬというのもあります。

センテンス２では靴のサイズをたずねています。

サイズ６というように、数字がサイズのあとにくることも知っておいてください。

また、センテンス１，２両方で、不定冠詞のaあるいはanが使われていることに注目してください。

色を聞くときには冠詞はひつようありません。

ただ前置詞inのあとに色をつけて聞いてください。

I hope that this one expression will help you with your shopping on your next trip abroad. Make sure you get the right size because being on a trip with the wrong size shoes is painful and can ruin a perfectly good vacation!

つまらないものですが…..

Hello! I am currently in the US visiting my family for the Christmas holidays. Yesterday we had a great day where everyone seemed to get the perfect gift. However, even in the US we try to be a little modest in describing gifts that we give to people and usually do not refer to them as “perfect.” So, today I would like to teach you a couple of expressions which we use when we give someone a present while expressing modesty or reserve. Here they are!

みなさん、こんにちは！　私は今アメリカの実家を訪ね、家族と一緒にクリスマス休暇を過ごしています。

昨日（12月25日）は最高でした。

それぞれがもらったプレゼントはみんな完璧でした。

ただし、たとえアメリカでも、人にプレゼントをあげるときは、多少控えめに言うようにしています。

だからふつう「完璧」という言葉はあまり使わないものです。

そこで今日は、私たちが誰かにプレゼントをあげるときに使う、

控えめで謙虚な表現を２つご紹介します。

Sentence 1: Here is a little something for you…

これ、つまらないものなんだけど…..

Sentence 2: I hope you like it…

気に入ってくれたら嬉しいんだけど…..

In Sentence 1 we use “little” to express modesty in much the same way that “tsumaranai” is used in Japanese. Listen carefully to the intonation in Sentence 2. You should say this with a slight nuance of uncertainty and reserve in your voice. This expresses that you are worried or care about how much the person receiving the gift likes it.

最初のセンテンスで、謙虚さを示す“little”という言葉を使っていますね。

これは日本で使われる「つまらない」とほぼ同じです。

２番目のセンテンスでは、イントネーションに注意して発音を聞いてくださいね。

ここでは、プレゼントを受け取った相手がどれくらいそのプレゼントを気に入ってくれるかが心配だという表現です。

皆が知っていて、だれも歌えない歌

Hello! Recently, I have been playing so much Christmas music at home and in my classes that I’m pretty sick of Christmas music this year. So, I have decided to teach my students about the most famous song for New Year’s. Strangely, this song is often played at closing time for stores in Japan or at some graduation ceremonies. The name of this song is “Auld Lang Syne” which loosely translates to “Old Long Past.” Americans sing, or attempt to sing this song, just after the count-down to the New Year. But, most people would be hard-pressed to sing two full verses. So, today I thought I would teach you one verse and the chorus which is more than any of your foreign friends know! Here they are!

最近は家と授業中にクリスマス音楽をいっぱいかけていて結構飽きてきてしまいました。

それで自分の生徒にNew Yearの一番有名な歌を教えることにしました。

面白いことにこの歌はよく日本で店の閉店時間や卒業式などでかかったりします。

この歌の名前は「Auld Lang Syne」で訳してみると「大昔」「遠い昔の日々」という意味になると思います。

カウントダウンが終わってからすぐこの歌が流れて来ますが、大体のアメリカ人はなかなか二段落でも歌えないと思います。

なので、今日は皆さんが歌えるように最初に二段落を教えてあげます。

これによって多分自分の外国人の友達より詳しくなると思いますよ！

Hello! Today, I would like to talk about an expression which is used to start a conversation and present it as it appears in the movie, "When Harry Met Sally…" Below, you will find the dialogue from one of the first scenes in the movie. Let's read through it!

こんにちは！今日は映画の「恋人達の予感」という映画に出て来る表現で会話を始めるための表現を紹介したいと思います。下にその表現が出るシーンのセリフが出ています。読んでみましょう！

Scene I: Harry and Sally start to drive from Chicago to New York

Harry: Why don't you tell me the story of your life?
Sally: The story of my life?!
Harry: We've got 18 hours to kill before we hit New York.
The story of my life isn't even gonna get us out of Chicago, though.
I mean, nothing's happened to me yet.
That's why I'm going to New York.
Harry: So something will happen to you?
Sally: Yes.
Harry: Like what?
Sally: Like I'm going to journalism school to become a reporter.
Harry: So you can write about things that happen to other people.

シーン１：ハリーとサリーは、シカゴからニューヨークへ車で移動を始めます。

Harry: あなたの人生について話してみたらどう？
Sally: 私の人生の話？！
Harry: ニューヨークに着くまで18時間もつぶさないといけない。

You can start a conversation with someone by just saying the following:

みなさんも、会話を始めるのにこの表現をこういうふうに言えばいいです：

Sentence 1: Tell me the story of your life.

センテンス１：　あなたの人生について話してみて。

Of course, you have to give the impression that you are very interested in that person and really want to hear the whole story of his/her life. Needless to say, this expression is often used to as a pick-up line. So, use it wisely!

もちろん、この発言しながら、相手の人生についての全てを聞きたいという好奇心を表さないといけません。言うまでもない、この表現はよくナンパ言葉として使われます。気をつけて、使ってみてください！

現在分詞・過去分詞のよくある間違い

Hello! Today I would like to write to you about a very common mistake made by non-native speakers of English. It is very easy to make, and it often results in humorous statements. To explain it simply we use the present participle as an adjective to explain the effect that something has on us (Sentence 1). The past participle is used as a verb to explain our feelings toward something (Sentence 2). Let’s look at two sentences which show the correct usage:

今日は英語を話すノンネイティブのよくある間違いを説明したいと思います。

間違えやすく、面白い発言になりますが、直してみましょう！

簡単に説明すると、

現在分詞は形容詞として、私たちへの影響を表すために使われます｛センテンス１｝。

過去分詞を使えば私たちの感想を表すことが出来ます｛センテンス２｝。

正しい使い方が入った二つの例文を読んでみましょう。

Sentence 1: Haruki Murakami’s books are interesting.

センテンス１：　村上春樹の小説は面白いです。

Sentence 2: I am interested by Haruki Murakami’s books.

センテンス２：　私は村上春樹の小説に興味があります。

次の例文では間違えた文章のすぐ後正しい文章が書かれています。

Sentence 3: I saw that movie and I was boring.　→ I saw that movie and I was bored.

センテンス３：映画を見て、私はつまらない人でした。映画を見て、つまらなくしていました。

Sentence 4: We went on a date and I was exciting. → We went on a date and I was excited. 　

センテンス４：私たちはデートしていて、私は面白い人でした。私たちはデートしていて、私はわくわくしていました。

In both Sentence 3 and 4 you should use the past participle to express your reaction to the situation. The mistakes are humorous, but I hope you don’t tell a potential friend that you are boring! Best of luck with these expressions and check back to learn how to correct other common mistakes.

センテンス３とセンテンス４の両方の例文に自分の反応を表すのに過去分詞は使うべきです。

ここにある間違いは面白いけど、友達になりそうな人に「私はつまらない人です」と言わないでほしいですね！

Hello! Last time I wrote about the Christmas season, and this time I would like to write about winter weather and related expressions. Here are some expressions to describe the cold and snowy weather which threatens to come any day now.

こんにちは！この前クリスマスの季節について書きましたが、

今回は冬の天気とその表現について書きたいと思います。

そろそろ来そうで寒くて雪が降るような天気を表現する言葉を紹介します。

Sentence 1: It’s so cold he has icicles on his nose!

センテンス１：寒過ぎて、彼の鼻からつららがぶらさがっています。

Sentence 2: We went on a ski trip in Colorado and got snowed in!

センテンス２：コロラド州にスキー旅行で行ったら、雪のせいで出られなくなってしまいました。

Sentence 3: I’m freezing out here! Let’s go inside for some hot cocoa!

センテンス３：ここは寒過ぎる！家の中に入って、ホットココア飲みましょう！

Sentence 1 uses hyperbole to emphasize that it is so cold that someone’s nose might freeze. In Sentence 2, the expression “to be snowed in” means that the snow prevents someone from leaving a place either by car or plane. Notice the difference in the pronunciation of “cocoa” in Sentence 3. Well, it’s pretty cold where I am now! I think I’ll have some hot cocoa and head to bed! Goodnight, talklers!

センテンス１の中で大げさに人の鼻が凍るような寒さを表す表現が使われています。

雪のせいで車や飛行機で移動できない状態を英語で言うと「to be snowed in」という表現を使います。

センテンス３の中の「cocoa」の発音の違いに注意しましょう。

Hello! Walking around Tokyo, it is really feeling like the Christmas season! There are decorations everywhere and it’s cold outside. So, today I would like to give you some expressions you can use around this season. Here they are!

こんにちは！

東京を歩いてみるとクリスマスの季節が来たという気がしますね！

クリスマスのデコレーションがいっぱいあって、天気も一段と寒くなりましたね！

今日はこのクリスマス季節に使える表現を説明したいと思います。

さて、下の三つになります！

Sentence 1: Let’s decorate the Christmas tree on Sunday!

センテンス１：こんどの日曜日にクリスマスツリーの飾り付けしましょう！

Sentence 2: If you’re not a good boy, Santa Claus won’t bring you any presents!

センテンス２：いい子にしていなかったら、サンタさんはプレゼント持って来てくれないよ！

Sentence 3:　Just 20 days ‘til Christmas!

センテンス３：　クリマスまであと２０日間！

Decorating the Christmas tree is a family tradition in the US when family members take out tree ornaments which they have collected for decades if not generations and spend time together preparing their household for Christmas. Sentence 2 is a common phrase you will hear from parents admonishing their children for bad behavior. Sentence 3 is the common phrase used to count down to Christmas Day. The “ ‘til” is a contraction of “until.”

クリスマスツリーの飾り付けはアメリカの家族文化の一つの習慣であって、

家族全員が何十年、あるいは何世代も、収集して来た

クリスマス・オーナメントを出して家庭のクリスマスの準備をし始めます。

クリスマス近くになると、親たちは子どもの悪い態度への叱り言葉もクリスマスが入って来ます。

クリスマスカウントダウンのための表現はこのセンテンス３です。

ここの「’til」というのは「until」の書略になります。

マフィア・イングリッシュ

Hello! In the previous article I presented some expressions from New Orleans English. Today, I would like to do something a little more fun and look at the expressions which are usually assigned to mafia characters in the American media. Some of the greatest American movies and television such as The Godfather series, Goodfellas, and The Sopranos have been made about the American mafia. Recently, I watched a very funny movie called “Analyze this” starring Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal. This movie is a comedy, so I would like to present some of the more amusing expressions which are used in the movie.

最近珍しい作品でロバートデニーロとビリークリスタルが出演マフィアコメディの「Analyze this!」を見ました。

この映画は本当に面白いから、映画の中の面白い表現を紹介します。

Sentence 1: Finding some good pizza in Tokyo?! That’s easy! Fuhgeddaboutit!　(Forget about it!)

センテンス１：東京で美味しいピザを探すこと？簡単だ！気にしないで！

Sentence 2: You tell some girl you love her…Ba-da-bing, Ba-da-boom…You’re married!

センテンス２：女に告白したら・・・じゃ、じゃーん・・・結婚だ！

“Fuhgeddaboutit” in sentence 1 is used to express that there is no need to worry. The “ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom” expression in Sentence 2 has a similar feeling in that this onomatopoeic expression is used to describe a process that goes smoothly and quickly without difficulties. So, use these expressions to impress your foreign friends with your knowledge of humor!

センテンス１の意味では心配する必要がないということです。

センテンス２は意味的に似ていて、擬音語的な表現でスムーズに問題がないように進むプロセスを説明します。

こんど外国人の友達と喋る時にユーモラスな表現で驚かせてください！

Sentence 2: Take care of yourself!

センテンス２：　お大事にね（無理しないでね）！

Sentence 1 can often be found in get well cards. Sentence 2 implies that someone should slow down and not take things too fast which is what I should probably do right now! So I hope to be writing to you next time from a more upright position! Here is wishing you (and me) the best of health!

ニューオーリンズの英語

Hello! In a previous article I mentioned that I would talk more about Southern English and New Orleans English. So, today I would like to introduce some characteristic expressions from New Orleans English. Here they are!

こんにちは！この前の記事で南部やニューオーリンズの英語をもっと説明すると約束したので、今日はニューオーリンズ英語の中の代表的な表現を説明したいと思います。さて、下の二つになります！

Sentence 1: I’m gonna make some groceries after work today.

センテンス１：今日仕事が終わってから買い物をしに行きます。

Sentence 2: I was walking on the banquette when I met Charlie.

センテンス２：報道歩いている途中にチャリーに会いました。

These expressions both come from French. New Orleans was originally a French colony for 85 years (1718-1803) before it was bought by the US in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The unique New Orleanian expression “to make groceries” derives from the French expression “faire le marché.” The French verb “faire” can mean “make” or “do” and “le marché” means “the shopping.” The origin for “banquette” is not so clear, but it appears to be an older word for “sidewalk.” I hope you enjoyed this introduction to New Orleans English. この表現は元々フランス語から来ます。

ニューオーリンズはアメリカがフランスから買い取った１８０３年まで８５年ぐらいフランスの植民地でした。

センテンス１の「to make groceries」というのはフランス語の「faire le marché」から来ています。

フランス語の動詞の「faire」は「make」あるいは「do」という意味があります。

そして、「le marché」というのは「the shopping」です。

センテンス２の「banquette」はオリジンがはっきりしないのですが、

古い言い方で「sidewalk」という意味に違いないのです。

こんにちは！

今日は日本語の「頑張ってね！」と違うようなお別れ言葉を紹介したいと思います。

実は意味としてこの表現は「頑張ってね」とは、正反対の意味になります。

その表現のリストはこの下になります。

Sentence 1: Take it easy!

センテンス１：　無理しないでね！

Sentence 2: Don’t work too hard!

センテンス２：　あまり仕事し過ぎないでね！

There is certainly a different cultural value toward work. Many Americans look at their jobs as the tedious time they must spend until they are freed from work to pursue what makes them happy. Another unfortunate attitude is that many people just do the bare minimum instead of taking pride in the work they do. One could say that Americans have a knack for enjoying life. However, I think that there must be a more balanced philosophy for life which is healthier.

仕事に対する態度は文化によってアプローチが違うという気がします。

たくさんのアメリカ人にとって仕事は自分の好きなことをやる前のめんどくさい義務になっているという姿勢が見られます。

残念ながら、この態度からある人は最低限の仕事だけをし、その仕事に誇りを持たないという人は少なくないと思います。

よく言えばアメリカ人は人生をエンジョイすることが上手と言えるでしょうか？だけれども、もっとバランスとれた哲学があるのではないかと私は思いますが。

Hello! I think that many people have difficulty starting conversations. I would like to give you some expressions for starting conversations using a simple technique. You should talk about something your listener is wearing or holding. Throwing in a compliment never hurts.

こんにちは。会話を始めることは多くの人にとって簡単ではないと思います。

今日は簡単な会話術を使うための会話出発点を紹介したいと思います。

聞き手が着ている物あるいは持っている物についてコメントしたほうがいいと思います。

それに加えて褒めるのがベストです。

Sentence 1: Where did you get that jacket? It’s great!

センテンス１：そのジャケットはどこで買いましたか？素敵ですね！

Sentence 2: So, what are you drinking? It looks good.

センテンス２：さ、何飲んでいるんですか？美味しそうですね！

Sentence 3: That scarf really matches your sweater! Where can I get one of those?

センテンス３：　そのマフラーはセーターにぴったりですね！私はどこで買えますか？

Complimenting people is always a nice way to start a conversation in a friendly way. It’s also just a really great thing to do for someone to boost his or her confidence! So, start a conversation in English with someone and make his/her day in the process!

人を褒めながら、会話をし始めるのってとっても親切だと思います。

それにつれてその人を自信を高めてあげることもすごくいいことですね。

それでは、こんどはだれかと英語で会話をし始める時にだれかを幸せにさせましょう！

Hello! I have a birthday coming up in about two weeks. So, today I would like to give you some expressions related to birthdays. This year I am honestly having difficulty thinking of something that I want to receive as a birthday present. Any suggestions are welcome! Well, let’s take a look at this week’s expressions.

こんにちは。

あと二週間ぐらい私の誕生日が来るので、今日は誕生日と関係している表現を説明したいと思います。

今年はどういうプレゼントがほしいか全然わからないので、困っています！

いい考えがあったら、是非教えてください。さて、今日の表現の読んでみましょう。

Sentence 1: What do you want for your birthday?

センテンス１：お誕生日はどういうプレゼントが欲しいですか？

Sentence 2: What did you do for your birthday?

センテンス２：お誕生日は何をしましたか？

Sentence 3: How did you celebrate your birthday?

センテンス３：　お誕生日はどういうふうにお祝いしましたか？

Sentence 4: He was so embarrassed because his cousin saw him in his birthday suit.

センテンス4：　彼は裸をいとこに見られたので、とても恥ずかしかった。

Sentence 1 is useful to ask someone what he wants before you buy that person a gift. Sentences 2 and 3 have the same meaning. In both cases you are asking the person what special thing he/she did to mark the occasion of a birthday. Finally, the expression “birthday suit” means “naked” in that on the day we are born, i.e. our birthday, we are all naked.

お誕生日の人にプレゼントを買うためにセンテンス１の質問をしたほうがいいです。

センテンス２とセンテンス３は同じ意味になります。

どちらでもお誕生日の人に誕生日が過ぎてから、その人のお祝いのやりかたを聞くことができます。

最後にセンテンス４の「birthday suit」と言う表現は「素っ裸」という意味になります。

生まれた日、いわゆる誕生日の時は素っ裸で登場しましたので、この逆説みたいな表現が言えます。

Hello! Today, I would like to discuss some other expressions for making requests in English. Today, I will present some examples of questions we ask to find out how much interest the listener has in our invitation. Let’s look at a few examples.

こんにちは！ 今日は英語で依頼するための他の表現を説明したいと思います。今日の表現を使えば聞き手の経験がわかるので、招待への聞き手の興味がわかると思います。幾つかの例文を読んでみましょう！

Sentence 1: Can you play soccer?

センテンス１：サッカーは出来ますか？

Sentence 2: Have you ever played soccer?

センテンス２：サッカーをやったことありますか？

Sentence 3: Are you any good at soccer?

センテンス３：　サッカーは上手ですか？

Sentence 1 and 2 both ask the listener about experience doing the activity. That is a good starting point to gauge the listener’s interest in the activity. Sentence 3 also check on experience by asking about skill level. These expressions represent one way for making requests in a “roundabout” way. I hope you find them useful as you invite your international friends to do things together.

センテンス１と２を聞くことによって聞き手の経験がわかります。そこから聞き手の興味を計ることが出来ます。センテンス３もレベルを聞くことで聞き手の経験が大体わかります。この表現を使えば一種の遠まわし聞き方ができます。外国人の友達を誘う時にはきっと便利になると思います。

遠まわしな言い方

Hello! Today, I would like to talk about making requests in English. Many Japanese seem to think that Americans always make requests in a straightforward way. However, this is not always the case. In every society there are times when we make requests and try to be considerate toward others. Therefore, English speakers also make requests in a “roundabout” way. Let’s look at a few examples.

こんにちは！

今日は英語で依頼するための表現を説明したいと思います。

日本人の中でアメリカ人はいつもストレートで物事を言うと思う人はいると思います。

しかし、これはいつもそうとは言えないと思います。

どの国でもある時には相手の気持ちを考えながらお願いすることがあります。

つまり、英語でも「遠まわし」にお願いすることがあります。幾つかの例文を読んでみましょう！

Sentence 1: Do you want to go to the park?

センテンス１：公園に行きたい？

Sentence 2: I was thinking about going to see a movie…

センテンス２：映画を見に行こうかなと思っていたんだけど・・・

Sentence 3: What do you think about Vietnamese food?

センテンス３：　ベトナム料理はどう思う？

Sentence 1 may not look like a request to you. However, even small children use this question to say, “Daddy, I want to go to the park. Will you go with me?” In Sentences 2 and 3 the speaker attempts to gauge the listener’s interest before making an invitation. These are some of the basic expressions for making requests in a “roundabout” way. In future articles I will present some more expressions so check back to learn more!

センテンス１は依頼のための文章に見えない人がいると思います。

しかし、子どもでもこの質問を聞くというのは「お父さん、公園に行きたい。

お父さんも一緒に行きたい？」を聞くことになります。

センテンス２と３では聞き手の興味を計るために聞きます。

ここで遠まわしにお願いする根本的な表現を説明しました。

南部の英語

Hello! Today, I was chatting with my in-laws and my sister-in-law told us that it has become popular for high school students to speak regional dialects of Japanese. I was interested in the topic because I am from the Southern US which has a distinctive English dialect called “Southern American English.” Some people also imitate this dialect in the US, and to me, it is what they say when they imitate a Southern accent not what they say that matters. Now, I would like to give you some examples of the most common aspects of Southern English.

今日妻の家族とお喋りしたら、義理のお姉さんから高校生の間で日本語の方言が流行っているという話を聞きました。

私の故郷はアメリカの南部だから、この話題に興味がありました。

アメリカの南部は独特な認められている方言があります：Southern American English。

アメリカでもある人は南部の英語を真似するけれども、私にとって言い方よりもお話の内容のほうが重要だと思います。

次に南部の英語のよく知られている特長を教えたいと思います。

Sentence 1: Where are y’all from?

センテンス１：あなた達はどこから来ましたか？

Sentence 2: I’m fixin’ to go to the store to buy me some Coke.

センテンス２：これからコーラを買うためにスーパーに行くつもり。

Sentence 3: I might could help you repair your car.

センテンス３：　あなたが車を修理するのを助けてあげることが出来るかもしれません。

“Y’all” is the second person plural pronoun “you” combined with “all” to mean “all of you.” It is the most distinctive and widely recognized feature of Southern English. In Sentence 2 there are two features of Southern English. The first is the use of the expression “fixing to” to mean I am going to do something very soon. The second is the use of “me” in a reflexive way. Finally, Sentence 3 displays the tendency that Southerners have to use double modals when it is unnecessary.

「Y’all」というのは二人単数形の代名詞の「you」プラス「all」になります。

これは南部英語の一番知られている特長です。

センテンス２には二つの特徴があります。

一つ目は「fixing to」という表現を「何々をやるつもり・・・」という意味で例文を作りました。

二番目は代名詞の「me」を再帰動詞と同じように使われています。

センテンス３の中で南部人はよく二つの法助動詞を同時に使うというところが見られます。

Hello! It is the season for baseball excitement! The World Series (i.e., The “American” Series) and the Japan Series will be starting any day now. So, I thought that I would present some English idioms from the game of baseball. Here are the idioms with their plain English equivalents.

To play ball – to cooperate

野球をする　――　協力する

To play hardball – to be a tough competitor

硬いボールで野球をやる　――　強い相手として競争する

To throw a curveball – to do something unexpected

カーブを投げる　――　期待されていないことをする

Next, I will present some sentences using the expressions.

次は上の表現が入った例文を書きます。

Sentence 1: We wanted to do business with RAC Corporation, but they wouldn’t play ball.

センテンス１：RACコーポーレーションと一緒に取引したかったけど、協力してくれなかった。

Sentence 2: RAC is playing hardball and trying to steal our market share.

センテンス２：RACは我が社に圧力をかけて、私たちの市場分割を取ろうとしています。

Sentence 3: RAC threw investors a curveball when it announced that it was discontinuing its line of motorcycles after 30 years of success.

センテンス３：３０年もオートバイメーカーとして成功を重ねていたRACコーポーレーションは
投資家に期待もできないオートバイのラインアップの生産中止という発表をしました。

The existence of idioms from baseball related to business is not surprising. Both are competitive enterprises and baseball is called the national pastime which would attest to the effect it should have on American culture and language. I hope these expressions come in handy for those of you like Mr. Kashiwagi who are going to take the TOEIC. Best of luck!

日本の居酒屋はいきいきゲーム以外飲酒の時のゲームは見たことないので、欧米文化のこの大事な部分について紹介したいと思います。

紹介するために「誘い」の表現を説明します。

Sentence 1: How about a game of darts?

I should point out that what is typically called 「ビリヤード」in Japan has different names in the US and the UK. In the US we typically call the game “pool” and the two most popular games are 8-ball and 9-ball. In the UK people call the game “billiards” and the most popular game is called “snooker” and it is played on a larger table.

ここで指摘しなければならないのは日本で言う「ビリヤード」というゲームはアメリカとイギリスでは名前が異なります。

アメリカでは普段「pool」と言って、一番人気があるゲームはエイトボールとナインボールになります。

イギリスでは「ビリヤード」と言って、一番人気のあるゲームはスヌッカーと呼びます。

スヌッカー用のテーブルはプール用のテーブルより大分大きいです。

マクドナルドの英語・その２

Hello! Today I would like to teach you how to respond to the questions which a service person would ask you at McDonald’s. Please see the lesson on October 6th for a review. So, let’s look at it all as one conversation.

こんにちは！今日マクドナルドの店員さんの質問への答え方を教えたいと思います。

復習するために１０月６日のレッスンを見てください。

質問と答えを一つの会話として読んでみましょう。

A: Welcome to McDonald’s! Can I take your order?

B: Yes, I want a Big Mac and a Coke.

A: Would you like fries with that?

B: Yes, give me a large order of fries.

A: Is that all for you today?

B: That should do it.

A：　いらっしゃいませ！ご注文は何になさいますか？

B：　はい。ビッグマックとコーラください。

A：　フライポテトはいかがですか？

B：　はい。Lサイズのポテトください。

A：　ご注文は以上でしょうか？

B：　それで全部です。

ジェンダー（差別的な職業の名前とその訂正）

Hello! I read in the news that it looks like Germany will have its first female chancellor in its history. Chancellor is a gender neutral term for a political position. However, there are many other names for professions which discriminate in that they infer that the person holding that position is a man. Today I would like to discuss those terms and more appropriate terms which should be used. I would like to start with a term which is used often in Japanese in katakana form.

こんにちは！今日ニュースの中で特に気になったのは女性が始めてドイツの首相[chancellor]になるということでした。

[chancellor]という言葉は女性にも使えますが、他に英語では男性にしか使わない職業の名前があります。

今日はその職業の適切の言葉を紹介したいと思います。

最初から日本語でよくカタカナで書かれている職業から始めたいと思います。

Outdated name ………　Revised name

（古い言い方）………（新しい言い方）

1.　stewardess ………. Flight attendant　

　「スチュワーデス」

2.　businessman ……… businessperson　

　「ビジネスマン」

3.　chairman　……… chair

　「議長・司会者」

4.　policeman ……… police officer

　「警察官」

5.　mailman ……… mail carrier

　「郵便配達人」

There is also an important way to avoid sexist language in making general statements. That is to avoid male or female pronouns by making the sentence plural. Let’s look at the example sentence in Japanese below and see how to translate it into English. We should change Sentence 1 to Sentence 2.

一般的に発言する時にも差別的な言葉を避けるために一つのルールがあります。

ジェンダー（性）のある代名詞を使わないために複数形の代名詞を使えばいいです。

まず日本語の例文を読んでからそれを日本語に訳しましょう。

その訳のセンテンス１をセンテンス２に変えればいいです。

例文：　出張の前に会社員は是認のために出張のスケジュールを提出しなければなりまん。

Sentence 1: Every employee must submit his travel itinerary for approval before a business trip.

Sentence 2: All employees must submit their travel itineraries for approval before business trips.

I hope you find this helpful in eliminating sexist expressions which might offend your colleagues or friends. It is a good idea to keep these guidelines in mind in your business correspondence as well and avoid terms like “Dear Sir” in favor of terms like “To Whom It May Concern.”

このレッスンによって友達と同僚と話す時に差別的な言葉を避けることができるといいです。

手紙を書く時でも挨拶として「Dear Sirs」より「To Whom It May Concern」みたいな表現がより良いということを忘れないでおきましょう。

Hello! I have a confession to make. Although I try to eat healthy things most of the time when I am in a hurry I get McDonald’s. It is simply the easiest, fastest, and most predictable meal you can buy when you are in a hurry. Today I would like to present some expressions which a service person would say to you at McDonald’s.

こんにちは！告白することがあります。

普段は健康にいい食べ物を食べようとするんですけれども、忙しい時は結構マクドナルドに行ってしまいます。

簡単で早くて予想できるファストフードは他に殆どないと思います。

今日はマクドナルドの店員がよく使う表現を紹介したいと思います。

Sentence 1: Welcome to McDonald’s! Can I take your order?

センテンス１：　いらっしゃいませ！ご注文は何になさいますか？

Sentence 2: Would you like fries with that?

Sentence 3: Is that all for you today?

センテンス３：　ご注文は以上でしょうか？

These expressions may seem very easy, but in the US you may hear them spoken very fast and in a variety of accents. Listen to the sentences above and try to answer the question. I will present some possible answers on next Monday.

この表現は簡単そうにみえるかもしれませんが、

アメリカで喋る速さとなまりは色々ありますから、

勉強しておいたほうがいいと思います。

上のセンテンスを聞いて答えてみてください。

久々の挨拶

Hello! I have returned to my university jobs and I have been meeting a lot of people who I have not met in a long time. Therefore, I thought I would give you some expressions to use in such a case. Here they are:

こんにちは！私は大学の仕事に戻ったので、久しぶりにいろいろな人と会っています。だから、その場面で使える表現を紹介したほうがいいと思いました。

Sentence 1: How have you been?

センテンス１：　お元気でしたか？

Sentence 2: What have you been up to?

センテンス２：　最近は何をしていますか？

Sentence 3: How’s it going?

センテンス３：　元気にしてる？

The first sentence is the most formal. Sentence 2 has a moderate level of formality, and Sentence 3 should be used with good friends. Please try to use them in the appropriate situations.

センテンス１は一番丁寧です。センテンス２は真ん中ぐらいの丁寧さで、センテンス３はとってもカジュアルなので、親しい友達と使ったほうがいいです。適切な場面で使ってみてください。

Revisiting “Just”（just を復習しましょう）

Hello! I just returned from the US yesterday after being there for one week. I bought my favorite movie on DVD, “Finding Neverland” starring Johnny Depp. The movie tells the story of the writer, J.M. Barrie, who wrote the “Peter Pan” story. While watching the movie I noticed that the word “just” is used in some key phrases so I would like to revisit the use of the expression in presenting some lines from the movie. Here they are.

こんにちは！昨日アメリカから帰って来ました。

一週間の滞在の間に一番好きな映画の「ネバーランド」を買いました。

映画の中でジョニーデップは「ピーターパン」を書いた作家のJ.M.バリーを演じます。

この映画を見ているうちに「just 」という単語が大事なセリフの中で使われているということに気づきましたので、この表現を復習したいと思います。

下に書いてあるセリフを読んでみましょう！

J.M. Barrie pretends to dance with a bear which is actually his dog to entertain the Davies boys in the park.

自分の犬が熊になったつもりでバリー兄弟の前でJ.M.バリーが犬と踊るパフォーマンスをする。

（英文）

1.Peter: This is absurd. It’s just a dog.

2.Peter’s Mother: Come on, darling.

3.Barrie: “Just a dog”? “Just”?
Porthos, don’t listen to him.

4.Barrie: Porthos dreams of being a bear and you want to dash those dreams by saying he’s “just a dog”? What a horrible candle-snuffing word. That’s like saying, “he can’t climb that mountain. He’s just a man.” Or “that’s not a diamond. It’s just a rock.”… “Just”…

Note: Porthos is the name of his dog.

※ポートスは犬の名前

(日本文）

１．ピーター：　　これは馬鹿げている。ただの犬だよ。

２．ピーターの母：　ピーター、協力しましょう！　　　　

３．バリー：　　「ただの犬」？！「ただの」？！
　
　ポートス、聞かないでくださいね。

４．バリー：ポートスは熊になることが夢なのに、「ただの犬」と言って、その夢を壊してしまうつもり？なんと火を消してしまいそうな単語！それは「かれはただの人間だから、その山に登れない」と同じ感じですよ。それとも「それはダイヤモンドじゃなくて、ただの石だよ。」・・・「ただの」・・・

Notice the use of “just” in the expressions such as “just a dog”, “just a man”, and “just a rock.” There is a negative emphasis placed on the commonality and limited characteristics of each thing. “Finding Neverland” is a truly inspiring movie which reminds us of the importance that imagination plays in our lives especially in difficult times. Please remember to change those subtitles to English and you may even challenge yourself and turn them off all together!

「ただの犬」や「ただの人間」や「ただの石」の表現の中で「just」の使い方に注目しましょう。こういうセリフのなかで「just」はその物の普通さや制限を表します。「ネーバーランド」は本当の感動させてくれる作品で想像力の大事さを私たちに教えてくれます。特に辛い時には想像力を使うとその傷害を乗り越えることができます。この映画をDVDで見たら字幕を英語字幕に変えてみてください。少し慣れたら字幕を全部消して、挑戦して聞いてみてください。

I have presented a very basic conversation so that you may focus on the prepositions. “For” and “until” are used to indicate the time period for the reservation. “For” is also used for the object as in the type of car. Then “at” is used for the location of “pick-up” and “to” is used for the destination of the “drop-off.” I hope you found this series of conversations on reservations and prepositions useful.

前置詞の使い方に注目するために短い会話を作りました。

「for」と「until」は予約の期間を説明するために便利です。

「for」車の種類をお願いする時にも使えます。

「at」はピックアップの場所で「to」はその返しに行く支店の所を表します。

Hello! Today, I will discuss the use of prepositions in a conversation for making restaurant reservations. So, let’s take a look at the conversation.

I have presented a very basic conversation so that you may focus on the prepositions. “For” and “at” are used to indicate date and time respectively. “For” is also used for the object as in how many people. Please notice that “in” is used for an indoor room while “on” is used for a patio or other outside space. Finally, “under” is used for the name of a reservation. I will present some more conversations for making reservations in the next few lessons.

前置詞の使い方に注目するために短い会話を作りました。

「for」と「at」は予約の日付や時間を表します。

あと「for」はその当てにになる客さんの人数にも使われます。

レストランの中のスペースを説明すると「in」を使いますが、外のスペースは「on」を使います。

最後に予約の名前を言う時は「under」という前置詞をちょっと珍しい使い方で使われます。

Hello! Recently, I have been making reservations for a trip, and I was thinking that it’s easy to make mistakes speaking in a foreign language and trying to communicate such very important information. So, today I would like to give you a conversation for making reservations with a special focus on prepositions.

こんにちは！最近、旅行のために予約を取りましたが、そのたびに外国語で予約を取るために大切な情報を交換している時には間違えやすいでしょうね。

今日は前置詞にフォーカスして予約を取るための会話を説明したいと思います。

I have presented a very basic conversation so that you may focus on the prepositions. “For” is used to indicate the purpose of the reservation as a flight reservation for 3 persons. “At” is used for time. “In” is used for different periods of time during the day. “On” is used for riding “on” various vehicles. 前置詞の使い方に注目するために短い会話を作りました。

「for」は話し手の目的、フライトの予約や何人分の予約など、を表すために使います。

「at」は正確な時間を表すために使います。

「on」は乗物に乗っているという状態を表します。このレッスンがためになると嬉しいです。

これからも予約を取るための会話をいくつか紹介したいと思っています。

英語の「つまらない物ですが・・・」

Hello! Yesterday, I went to visit a co-worker’s house with my family. My co-worker is Japanese, so we spoke Japanese while we were there, but upon arriving at the house I remembered the expression I learned for giving a gift when you go to someone’s house:

「つまらない物ですが・・・」

こんにちは！昨日、家族で妻の同僚の家に遊びに行きました。

その方は日本人なので、私達は日本語で話していたのですが、家に着いた途端に日本人の家を訪ねる時の表現を思い出しました。

それはプレゼントを上げる時に「つまらない物ですが・・・」という表現です。

Most of my friends say that this expression is too formal. It’s hard to know the difference between the language you learn in school and the language that people speak in real life. So, I would like to give you some expressions for giving presents when you visit someone’s house.

私の友達によりますとこの表現は硬過ぎます。

学校で習った外国語と人間が実際に話す言葉を区別できるのって難しいですね！

それで、今日は人の家を訪ねた時にプレゼントを上げる時に使う表現を説明したいと思います。

Sentence 1: We thought you might like this.

センテンス１：　　これが気に入るかなと思いました。

Sentence 2: We stopped on the way and bought a bottle of wine.

センテンス２：　　ここに来る途中で酒屋に行ってこのワインを買いました。

Sentence 3: Hey! I almost forgot! We got this on the way over here.

センテンス３：　　そうだ！忘れちゃった！ここに来る途中でこれを買った。

In English we usually emphasize that it was no trouble to get something and it was just an afterthought. In that way we show modesty and try not to make our host feel bad. So, next time you go to someone’s house for dinner or a party try out these expressions!

英語でこういうことを言う時に「面倒じゃなかった」ということを強調して言います。

それによって、ホストには謙遜の姿勢や気を悪くさせないつもりという気持ちを表すことができます。

こんど友達の家に遊びに行った時にこの表現を使ってみてください。

"What a small world!"

Hello! Recently, I have met many people who share mutual acquaintances with me. When we meet people for the first time it is common to try to find people that we both know. So, today I would like to discuss some expressions we can use to ask people if they share our acquaintances or friends.

こんにちは！最近私と共通の友達を持っている人と会うのがよくあることです。

はじめてだれかに会うと共通の友達を見つけるというのが普通のことだと思います。

Sentence 1: Do you know Fred Sanchez？

センテンス１：　あなたはフレッド・サンチェスを知っていますか？

Sentence 2: You wouldn’t happen to know Fred Sanchez, would you？

センテンス２：　フレッド・サンチェスという人は知らなかったですか？

Sentence 3: Have you ever heard of Fred Sanchez？　

センテンス３：　フレッド・サンチェスのこと聞いたことありますか？

Sentence 4: What a small world!

センテンス４：　世間は本当に狭いですね！

If someone has heard of the person you are talking about, then you can use Sentence 4 to express your surprise that you have a mutual friend. Try these expressions next time you meet someone new!

もし相手はそのことを知っていたら、その偶然から生まれるびっくりの気持ちを表す気持ちをセンテンス４で伝えることができます。

こんど新しい知り合いに会った時にこの表現を使ってみてください。

英語でコンピューターのスペックについて答えよう！

Hello! Today I would like to teach you how to answer our questions from last Thursday’s lesson. To do so, we will need some expressions to tell someone about a computer’s specifications or “specs.” The unit for memory is the byte and processor speed is measured in “Hertz” and many of you have surely heard the terms “megabyte” and “gigabyte.” Sometimes these terms are shortened. Often “megabytes” becomes “megs,” “gigabytes” becomes “gigs,” and gigahertz becomes “gigs.” So let’s practice the answers using those expressions.

こんにちは！ 今日はこの前の木曜日に紹介したコンピューターに関する質問にの答え方を教えたいと思います。

そのためにコンピューターのスペックについて話すための表現も必要になって来ます。

メモリーの単位はバイト (bytes) でプロセッサースピードは周波数の単位のヘルツ (hertz) が使われています。

それから皆さんは「メガバイト(megabytes)」や「ギガバイト(gigabytes)」という言葉はよく聞いたことあると思います。

しかしこういう表現はよく省略して使われます。

「megabytes」のことをよく「megs」と言います。

「gigabytes」のことをよく「gigs」と言います。

後プロセッサースピードの「gigahertz」のことも「gigs」と言います。

さて、質問への答え方をその表現を使って練習しましょう！

A: How fast is the processor?

B: It has a 3.6 gig processor.

A:　プロセッサーの速さはどうですか？

B:　このコンピューターには3.6ギガヘルツのプロセッサーが入っています。

A: How big is the hard disk?

B: It’s 150 gigs.

A:　の容量はどれくらいですか？

B:　このハードディスクは150ギガバイトです。

A: How much RAM does it have?

B: It has 512 megs of RAM.

A: ＲＡＭメモリーはどれくらいありますか？
B:　このコンピューターは512メガバイトのRAMメモリーが入っています。

Notice the use of the verbs “is” and “have.” To describe a characteristic (or spec) of a product we use the verb “is.” To describe a part of a product, here referring to the computer as “it,” we use the verb “have” to indicate that the computer “has a 3.6 gig processor” or the computer “has a 19 inch monitor.” So, how did you do with answering the questions about your computer? Please try again and see how you do.

動詞の「is」と「have」の使い方をよくみてください。

ある製品の特徴、いわゆるスペック、を現すためには動詞の「is」を使います。

ある製品の一つの持っている部分について話す時は動詞の「have」を使います。

このように「3.6ギガヘルツのプロセッサーを持っている」や「19インチのモニターを持っている」ということが言えます。

Hello! Today I would like to talk about some expressions related to computers. The English lexicon expands rapidly as new technology is invented and computers make up a good part of the new additions. So, today I would like to give you some basic expressions to use to talk about a computer’s specifications or “specs.”

こんにちは！ 今日はコンピューターに関する表現を説明します。英語の語彙はテクノロジー、特にコンピューターが、発明されればされるほど増える一方です。それで今日はコンピューターのスペックを説明する表現を紹介します。

Sentence 1: How fast is the processor?

センテンス１:　プロセッサーの速さはどうですか？

Sentence 2: How big is the hard disk?

センテンス２:　ハードディスクの容量はどれくらいですか？

Sentence 3: How much RAM does it have?

センテンス３：　ＲＡＭメモリーはどれくらいありますか？

Notice the difference between using the adjectives in Sentences 1 and 2 and the verb “have” in Sentence 3. Please try to answer these questions about your computer. Then check back on Monday and I will explain how to answer these questions.

センテンス１と２の形容詞とセンテンス３にある動詞の「have」の使い方に注意をしましょう。自分のコンピューターについてこの質問に答えてみてください。次の月曜日に答え方を説明します。

魚釣りから来た英語の表現

Hello! I have a confession to make. I am an American who is crazy about fishing! Yesterday I bought a rod and reel and I cannot wait to go fishing! Well, since the typhoon caused me to postpone my fishing trip I think I will talk about some English expressions which come from fishing. Here they are!

こんにちは！今日は告白することがあります。

私はアメリカ人の釣りばかです！昨日ロッドとリールを買ったので、魚釣りに行きたくてしょうがないです！

しかし、台風.が来たせいで今週末の釣り旅行が中止になってしまったので、今日は魚釣りから来る英語の表現を紹介したいと思います。

さて、下の五つになります！

Sentence 1: The one that got away.

センテンス２：　逃げられた一人。

Sentence 2: He’s quite a catch.

センテンス２：　彼はいい男ですね！

Sentence 3: It sounds like a big fish story to me.

センテンス３：　それは信じがたい大げさな話という気がしますね。

Sentences 1, 2, and 3 are all expressions which come from stories about a fish that someone caught. In fishing Sentence 1 refers to a fish that was hooked but escaped. In human relationships it refers to a lover who was possibly the perfect match but left. As for Sentence 2, a “catch” refers to a fish, so using the expression “quite a catch” emphasizes the size of the fish. In human relationships this sentence would be used to tell a woman that she has found a great partner. The “big fish story” in Sentence 3 is a story that fishermen tell about a fish that got away, just as in Sentence 1. The key aspect of this story is that the size of the fish is always exaggerated. So, you can use it to express doubt about something someone tells you which seems exaggerated.

上の三つのセンテンスの表現は全部釣りで釣った魚についての表現から来ます。

センテンス１は針にかっかた魚で逃げられた魚のことを表します。

人間関係では運命的で逃げられた相手のことになります。

センテンス２では「catch」というのは釣った魚になるけど、「quite」という副詞を付けるとその魚の大きさを強調することができます。

この表現を使えば女性の友達に「いい男見つけたね」ということが言えます。

センテンス３の「big fish story」という話は魚釣りの好きな人がよくする話です。

その内容は大体巨大な魚釣ったけど逃げられたとのことです。

もちろんその魚の大きさは大げさに言っていますね。普通の会話で相手の話に疑問を抱いたらこの表現が使えます。

Sentence 4: He’s just fishing for compliments.

センテンス４：　彼は褒め言葉をもらおうとしていますね。

Sentence 5: He bought it hook, line, and sinker.

センテンス５：　彼は全部信じてしまいましたね。

Sentence 4 uses the verb “fishing” to express the meaning of “trying to get.” In Sentence 5 the verb “bought” means to accept something as the truth. “Hook, line, and sinker” expresses the idea that a fish swallows all of these in its exuberance to eat the bait. In the same way, someone is gullible in accepting everything in a story as the truth. Well, I hope you enjoyed today’s lesson. I think you will find that there are many other expressions related to fishing in the English language and other languages as fishing was, after all, originally a means for gathering food for survival. Personally, I just hope I find the time to enjoy the sport of it!

センテンス４では「fishing」という動詞は何かを「取ろうとしている」という意味で使われています。

センテンス５の「bought」は真実として受け取るという意味になります。

「針とラインと重り」を全部飲み込んだ魚は必死に餌を食べようとした時に全部飲んでしまいます（ありえない話かもしれませんが・・・）。

同じように、ある人が嘘の話を全部信じてしまうことという意味になります。

今日のレッスンはエンジョイしたのでしょうか？

魚釣りはもともと生きるための行動だったので、英語あるいは他の言語に釣りから来る表現は少なくないと思います。

個人的に、近いうちにスポーツとしてできたらいいなと私は思っているんですけどね！

英語で「Get in Shape!」

Hello! Today, I would like to talk about a common worry people have during the summer. I remember that weeks before I went to the beach I was thinking, “I really need to get in shape!” In the winter it’s easy to hide “love handles” and “spare tires” but when you go the beach you have to let it all hang out! So, today I would like to give you some expressions related to getting in shape. In all of the sentences we will use the verb “need” followed by the infinitive (to + verb).

こんにちは！今日は夏の唯一の悩みについて語りたいと思います。

この前ビーチ旅行に行ったんですけれども、行く数週間前から「体を鍛えないといけない！」と思っていました。

冬の間は「love handles (訳：わき腹)」　や「spare tire (訳：下腹)」を隠すことは出来るけど、夏になると出さざるをえない時もありますよね！

今日はそのシェイプアップに関する表現を教えたいと思います。

全ての例文に動詞の「need」の後に「to + verb」という形が来ます。

Sentence 1: I need to get in shape!

センテンス１：　私はシェイプアップしなくちゃね！

Sentence 2: 「Ｉ need to lose some weight!

センテンス２：　私は痩せなきゃいけないね！

Sentence 3: I need to go on a diet!

センテンス３：　私はダイエットしなくちゃね！

Sentence 4: I need to get some exercise!

センテンス４：　私は運動しなくちゃね！

Please notice the use of the prepositions “in” and “on.” Also notice that we use the quantifier “some” before the objects “weight” and “exercise.” So, good luck to those of you who hope to get in shape this summer! I know I need some luck!

かき氷は何と言うの？

Hello! Today, similar to my previous discussion of the words for carbonated beverages, I would like to talk about expressions for a particular summer treat: the snow cone.

こんにちは！今日は前にジュースの名前を説明したと同じ感じでかき氷の言い方について話したいと思います。

The term "snow cone" implies that it is served in a cone. However, in the South, and I would guess many other areas it is served in a cup and called a "snow ball." The interesting thing is that the thing actually made of "snow" is the shaved ice and not the actual cone which is usually made from paper unlike an ice cream cone. Next, I would like to give you a couple of expressions to use in relation to shaved ice and ice cream.

「ｓｎｏｗ　ｃｏｎｅ」という言い方は、アイスクリームのコーンに入っているのが出てくるという感じがします。

アメリカの南部や恐らくほかの地域でも、かき氷は大体紙コップに出てくるし、「ｓｎｏｗ　ｂａｌｌ」という言い方をします。

面白いことに「ｓｎｏｗ」の実際の「かき氷」の部分はその丸いボールになっているところであって、コーンはアイスクリームのコーンと違って紙で作られています。

次にかき氷やアイスクリームについて話す時に使える表現を紹介したいと思います。

Sentence 1: What flavor would you like？

センテンス１：　何味がいいですか？

Sentence 2: How many flavors would you like？

センテンス２：　いくつの味がほしいですか？

You could use Sentence 1 to ask a friend what to order for him or her. Sentence 2 is a question that the service person might ask you as you can often have several flavors of syrup put on one snow ball. As we get into the hottest days of the summer make sure to cool off with a delicious snow ball!

友達の注文を聞く時はセンテンス１が使えます。

かき氷の見せの店員さんにセンテンス２は聞くかもしれないです。

センテンス２の質問聞かれたら大体は複数の味シロップ頼んでもいいという店が多いです。

夏の一番暑い時期が来ているので、おいしいかき氷で一息入れてくださいね！

花火は夏と真冬

Hello! I think that most people in Japan associate fireworks with summer, but in the US there are two times of the year when we usually enjoy fireworks. Those two times are Independence Day (July 4th) and New Year’s Eve (December 31st). Today I would like to present some expressions related to fireworks. First, I should explain the two basic types of fireworks.

こんにちは！日本では花火は夏のイメージがあるけど、アメリカでは年間二回花火をエンジョイする祭日があります。

それは独立記念日（７月４日）と大晦日（１２月３１日）です。

今日は花火に関するボキャブラリーを紹介したいと思います。

まず花火の二つの種類を説明する必要があります。

One type of firework is the kind that makes a loud sound with minimal visual effect. These are called “firecrackers” as “crack” is an onomatopoeic word for a sharp, exploding sound. Firecrackers are always a part of celebrating the Chinese New Year. For the majority of fireworks which explode revealing various colors the general term “fireworks” is used. Now to the expressions.

一つの種類は音だけで楽しむタイプです。

これは「firecracker (訳：爆竹)」と言います。

「crack」という単語は擬音語でピッチの高い爆発する音を表します。

こういう爆竹はよく中国の旧正月で使われます。

その他、綺麗な色で楽しむ花火は一般の単語の「fireworks」を使います。さて、今回の例文に行きましょう！

Sentence 1: Let’s go see the Sumida River Fireworks Display next weekend!

センテンス１：　今週末、隅田川花火大会を見に行きましょう！

Sentence 2: Is it legal to set off fireworks in this city?

センテンス２：　この町で花火をやるのは違法ですか？

Sentence 3: You should visit New York’s Chinatown for the Chinese New Year and enjoy the excitement of the lion dances and firecrackers.

センテンス３：　ニューヨークのチャイナタウンに行って、旧正月の獅子舞（ライオンダンス）や爆竹を体験したほうがいいですよ。

In Sentence 1 we use the word “display” for any large public fireworks show. It is always a good idea to ask the question in Sentence 2 before using fireworks since fireworks are a fire hazard and thus illegal in many states and cities. The verb for launching fireworks is “set off.” Finally, in Sentence 3 I mention “firecrackers” which are used in the Chinese New Year celebration in New York. I hope you are able to enjoy the fireworks safely with your family and friends this summer!

センテンス１の中で花火大会を意味とする言葉は「display」になります。

アメリカで花火に火を付ける前にセンテンス２をだれかに聞いたほうがいいです。

花火は家事を起こす恐れがあるし、ある州や町では禁じられています。

花火を発射させる動詞は「set off」になります。

センテンス３の「firecrackers」は上に説明した中国の旧正月で使うタイプになります。

この夏で安全に、そして楽しくご家族や友達と花火が楽しめるように！

Hello! Today we will discuss some expressions to use when you are inviting people on a picnic or to go out to eat. It is especially good to be careful when suggesting food which may be new to people. Therefore, in Japan you should be careful about what you suggest for foreigners. However, it is always good to introduce people to new foods. After all there is an English proverb which reads, “Variety is the spice of life.” So, here are our expressions for today.

こんにちは！今日は食べ物の好みなどを聞く表現を紹介したいと思います。

特に初めて食べる料理を人に勧める時は気をつけたほうがいいと思います。

そして、日本で外国人に食べ物を勧める時は気をつけましょう。

しかし、新しい食べ物を紹介するのもいいことだと思います。

英語の諺で「Variety is the spice of life.（訳：人生には変化が必要だ。）」と言いますよね！

さて、今日の表現は下の三つです。

Sentence 1: Can you eat sushi?

センテンス１：　お寿司は食べられますか？

Sentence 2: Are you OK with natto?

センテンス２：　納豆は大丈夫ですか？

Sentence 3: How do you feel about pork?

センテンス３：　豚肉はどうですか？

Sentence 1 simply uses the potential form and is very direct. Sentence 2 conveys a little more concern about the listener’s preferences and Sentence 3 is the most polite of the three expressions. It is always a good idea to ask about pork as both Muslims and Jews do not eat pork for religious reasons. Nevertheless, I do have some Jewish friends who eat pork, so it is always best to ask. Finally, you never know if someone is a vegetarian which is another reason to ask about meat.

センテンス１には可能形が使われているので、ストレートな聞き方だと思います。センテンス２にはもうちょっとの気使いが入っていて、聞き手の好みについて聞くことができます。センテンス３は一番丁寧です。豚肉について聞いたほうがいいというのはイスラム教とユダヤ教の人は宗教の教えから豚肉を食べないからです。と言っても、私のユダヤ教の友達の中で平気で豚肉を食べる友達もいるので、やっぱり聞いておいたほうがいいと思います。最後にベジタリアンの外国人も少なくないので、お肉について聞いたほうがいいです。

この表現を使うことによって友情関係を深めて、美味しい食べ物をエンジョイして、外国人の友達に日本のデリカシーを紹介してください！

「Nothing beats a Coke!」

Hello! Today I would like to return to my theme of last Thursday: the picnic. Today I would like to discuss a few things related to food and drink that Americans, and particularly Southerners, enjoy when they go on picnics (Note the usage of the preposition “on”). First, I would like to discuss some lexical variation between different regions in the US. Many Japanese think of US as lacking dialects when there is significant difference between regions. To explain this I would like to discuss the words used to describe carbonated syrup-based beverages such as Coca-Cola. まず、アメリカの中での地域によって異なるボキャブラリーがあります。

アメリカは日本みたいに方言がないというふうに思われています。

しかしその多様性を簡単に述べるために「ジュース」の説明をしたいと思います。

地域によって三つの単語が使われています。

Here you can see the results of a web-based survey on what words people use in different regions. You should be aware of what word is used in a region where you are traveling. Most people are forgiving of foreigners, but, as a native of the South, I still cringe when people say “soda” or “pop.”

ここで地域別でどの単語が使われているかというウェブ上のアンケートの結果が見られます。

あなたの旅行先を見ておいたほうがいいかもしれないです。

外国人の言うことに関しては許しやすいです。

しかし、私自身は南部人ですから「soda」や「pop」を聞くと鳥肌が立ちますね。

Next, I would like to give you a couple of expressions using the word “nothing.” Although as nothing denotes negation it seems like a negative word it can be used in expressions for positive feelings.

次は「nothing」を使う二つの表現を説明したいと思います。この単語は否定形でネガティブなイメージがあるかもしれませんが、いいことを表すこともできます。

Sentence 1: There’s nothing like a cold soda on a hot summer day!

センテンス１：　夏の暑い日はコーラに限る！（直訳：コーラに似てる物はない）

Sentence 2: Nothing beats watermelon on a hot summer day!

センテンス２：　夏の暑い日は西瓜に限る！（直訳：何も西瓜を破らない）

Watermelon is also a favorite food in the US to eat in the summer. Many of you may be curious about what picnic foods people eat in the US. Well, all over Tokyo you have access to some traditional Southern picnic foods. You just have to drop by your local “KFC” which is how most Americans refer to “Kentucky Fried Chicken.” Biscuits and cole slaw are particularly Southern foods. So, buy yourself a six pack of Coke and a bucket of fried chicken and let the picnicking begin!

西瓜はアメリカでも大人気の夏の食べ物です。

後、アメリカでのピクニックフーズは何でしょうかと考えている人がいるかもしれません。

東京中に南部の伝統的なピクニックフーズはすぐ手に入れます。

ケンタッキーをよればすぐ買えますよ。アメリカではケンタッキーのことを「KFC」と呼びます。

ビスケットとコールスローは特に南部らしい食べ物です。

今度「Coke」を六個入りのパックとフライチキンのバケッツを買ってピクニックに出かけましょう！

旅先での英会話

Hello! It seems like every day is a scorcher recently. Today, I'm on my way to the beach in Izu. On the bullet train, we met in Indian family who live outside of Washington, DC. The father asked me how to get from the station to Mount Fuji, and I remembered how insecure one can feel when traveling in the country where one cannot speak the language. He asked me the following question:

こんにちは！近頃は毎日やけどしそうなほど暑いですね。

実は今、伊豆へ海水浴に行く電車の中で、この原稿をかいているのですが、東京から熱海まで乗った新幹線の中で、ワシントンDC郊外から日本へ旅行に来ているというインド人家族に出会いました。

お父さんである人が私に「駅から富士山へはどうやっていったらいいのでしょうか」とたずねてきました。

その時、言葉の話せない国を旅しているときどれほど不安になるかということを思い出したのです。

彼は私に次のような質問をしました：

Sentence 1: Where can I get on the bus to Mount Fuji?

センテンス１：富士山行きのバスにはどこで乗れますか。

When asking for information on a trip, this expression is useful. Simply start a sentence with "where can I..." then add the verb and object. The son was really interested in trains, and the father in hot springs, said the man also asked me the following questions.

旅先で道を聞くとき、この表現は便利です。

文のはじめに "where can I..."と言って、それから順に同士と目的語を加えればよいのです。

息子さんは電車に、お父さんは温泉に、それぞれとても興味があったので、お父さんは、わたしにまた次のような質問をしました。

Sentence 2: Where can I buy a toy bullet train?

センテンス２：おもちゃの新幹線はどこで買えますか。

Sentence 3: Where can I go to a hot spring close to Tokyo?センテンス３：東京の近くだと、どの辺の温泉に行けますか？

I think it is a good idea to keep a few phrases like this one in mind or even write them on a card to keep in your pocket. As a last resort you can show the card to someone if you have trouble communicating. Happy summer "Talkling"!

夏はピクニック！

Hello! Today I would like to talk about an activity other than going to the pool which is a favorite in summer: the picnic. The origin of this word is actually quite interesting as it comes from the French verb “piquer” meaning “to pick.” This verb was then combined with “nique” to create a rhyme and resulted in the French term “pique nique.” This event was slightly different from the modern equivalent in that it could be held inside or outside and the defining condition of the event was that all participants contributed dishes. Therefore, in modern English we would call this a “potluck dinner” meaning that you “pick” your food from many different “pots” and hopefully you get “lucky” and choose some delicious dishes! こんにちは！この前プール遊びについて書きましたが、今日は夏の他の人気のある遊び方について書きたいとおもいます。

それはピクニックです。

この単語は１８世紀にフランス語の「piquer」という動詞から作られました。

この動詞は「取る」という意味になります。

そこから押韻する「nique」という音とつなげられ、「pique nique」になりました。

しかしこのイベントはもともと室内でも野外でも行われたし、一番大事な特徴はお客さんが皆料理を一品持って来ることでした。

現代英語ではこういうパーティーを「potluck dinner」と言います。

「pot」（鍋）と「luck」（運）をつなげることによってこういうディナーパーティーではいろいろな食べ物を「鍋」から「取る」から、「運」が良ければ美味しい物が食べられます。

次「picnic」が入った表現を説明します。

センテンス１：　今度の日曜日セントラルパークでピクニックをしましょう！

The verb “have” is commonly used to describe organizing and carrying out an event like a picnic or a party where people gather.

動詞の「have」はよくこういう人が集まるイベント、パーティーとか、を司会するという意味で使います。

Sentence 2: That physics class is no picnic!

センテンス２：　あの物理の授業はらくじゃないよ！

This idiom is used to express the idea that some activity is not enjoyable or easy like a picnic. Picnics should be just that, enjoyable and easy. I am always surprised that more people don’t do picnics in the park near my house. So, don’t forget that you don’t have to wait for the cherry blossoms. You can have a picnic anytime that the weather permits.

このイディオムを使えば、否定形を使っているので、あることがピクニックのように楽しくて楽ではないということが言えます。ピックニックはそうであるべし。私の家の近くに公園あるのですが、お花見の季節以外ピクニックをしている人は殆ど見かけません。だから、桜が咲くのを待ってないでください。天気がよければ、いつでもピクニックしましょう！

夏はプール遊び、安全第一：プールの注意

Hello! Yesterday my family went over to a friend’s house so our kids could play in their “kiddie pool.” A “kiddie pool” is a shallow pool for children to sit and stand in with no danger of drowning. As many of you may be going abroad to resorts for vacation I thought I would present some important expressions from pool safety signs. Below are some common pool signs.

こんにちは！昨日友達の家に遊びに行って、子供達を子供用のプールで遊ばせました。

英語で「kiddie pool」というのですが、これはゴム製の浅いプールで、子供が立ったり座ったり出来る溺れる恐れのないプールのことです。

この夏休みリゾート地区に旅行する方は少なくないと思うので、今日は、ホテルのプールに普段あるプールの注意が書いてある看板を説明します。

下にその看板に書いてある文書があります。

Sign 1: No lifeguard on duty.

看板１：　監視員がいません。

Sign 2: Shallow water. No diving.

看板２：　底が浅いので、飛び込み禁止です。

Sign 3: Walk. Don’t run.

看板３：　危険ですので、プールサイドで走らないでください。

These are all signs which are common to find around a hotel pool. It is important for you to know these things, so please keep an eye out for these signs around the pool. Have a safe and fun-filled summer vacation!

この看板は普段ホテルのプールによくあります。この看板に書いてある情報は知っておいたほうがいいので、プールの周りをよく見てください。安全で楽しい夏休みを！

「Just」＝「にかかわらず」or「正確に」

Hello! Continuing with our lesson from Monday, today I will discuss some more expressions which start with the word “just.” I will present two expressions which have the meaning of “despite” and two which mean “exactly.”

こんにちは！月曜日のレッスンに続きまして、今日も「just」を使う表現を説明したいと思います。その中で最初の二つの表現は「にかかわらず」という意味で、後の二つは「正確に」という意味になります。

“Just the same” in Conversation 1 expresses the idea of doing something “despite” some advice. “Just in case” in Conversation 2 means to do something to be prepared for some unanticipated event (like rain).

会話１の「just the same」を使えば、アドバイスを聞いたことにもかかわらず、違うことをするという意味になります。会話２の「just in case」というのは日本語の「万が一」という表現に近いです。

Conversation 1

A: In Thailand you do not have to wear a helmet when you ride on a scooter.

B: I think I will wear a helmet just the same.

会話１

Ａ：タイではスクーターに乗る時はヘルメットをかぶらなくていいですよ。

Ｂ：それにかかわらず、私はヘルメットをかぶると思います。

Conversation 2

A: The weather forecast is for a sunny day.

B: I’ll bring an umbrella just in case.

会話２

Ａ：天気予報によると今日は晴れるそうだ。

Ｂ：それにかかわらず、傘を持って行くと思います。

Drinking a beer after a hot bath
お風呂上りのビールを飲みながら

Sentence 1: This is just what the doctor ordered!

センテンス１：やっぱりお風呂上りの一杯は最高だね！

Sentence 2: You have to pick up the sushi just right with your chopsticks or it will fall apart.

センテンス１：お箸でちゃんとお寿司を持ち上げないと崩れちゃう。

The idiom in Sentence 1 expresses the idea that something is perfect for a situation. In Sentence 2 the idea is that something must be done in “exactly” the correct way. I hope that this lesson was “just what the doctor ordered” for you!

センテンス１のイディオムでは物事がその場面に合っているということを表します。センテンス２では正確のやりかたというのが意味に含まれます。このレッスンがお風呂上りの一杯と同じように効きますように！

「Just」、そのまま。

Hello! Last night I watched a movie in the Bridget Jones series of movies. I particularly like one quote from the movie which is a good statement on relationships. So, I would like to use that statement to discuss some other related grammatical expressions. These expressions start with the word “just” and express the idea of some thing without change or need for change. The main character, Bridget Jones, struggles to change herself by losing weight or quitting smoking so she can find the perfect man. But, she finally finds someone who says:

こんにちは！昨日ブリジット・ジョーンズのシリーズの二作目を見ました。その中で付き合いに関するとってもいい言葉のセリフを説明したいと思います。その後それと関係している文法の表現をあげます。この表現は全て「just」が入ります。それで、物事に変わりがないとか変化がなくていいという意味を表します。主人公のブリジット・ジョーンズはこの映画のシリーズの中でいつも自分を変えて、例えば痩せてタバコを止めて、理想的な相手を探しています。それで、やっとその人を見つけたらその人はこう言います・・・

Sentence 1: I like you just the way you are.

センテンス１：僕はありのままの君が好きだよ。

You can also use the following expression to request things without any changes or alterations.

後一般的に物事を決める時に下の表現が使えます。

A: Would you like some ice cream on your apple pie?

B: Just the way it is, please.

Ａ：　アップルパイにアイスクリームを載せますか？

Ｂ：　そのままで・・・

The next expression is used to confirm the truth of a statement made by the listener.

次の表現を使うことによって聞き手が過去に言ったことと賛成することができます。

Sentence2: That guy is a complete idiot, just like you said!

センテンス２：あいつはあなたが言った通り間抜けだ！

I think that if you understand the usage of “just” it should help you express yourself better in English. Try it out and see how you do!

「Thank」を使った表現

Hello! Today I would like to continue with some more expression using “thank.” This time I would like to explain some more advanced expressions which involve finer nuances in meaning. So, let’s hear the expressions.

こんにちは！ 今日も「thank」を使う表現をもっと説明したいと思います。今回は上級ぐらいの表現で細かいニュアンスが入った表現です。さて、今日の例文を聞きましょう！

Sentence 1: Thanks to your hard work the presentation was a great success!

センテンス１:　あなたが頑張ったおかげで、プレゼンテーションが大成功でした。

Sentence 2: Thanks for nothing!

センテンス２:　 大きなお世話だ！

Sentence3: Teaching is a thankless job.

センテンス３：　教職って感謝されない仕事だな。（私は本当は思っていないですが！）

Sentences 2 and 3 are more negative sentences than you may associate with the word “thanks.” I hope that you will learn to study the words you know in more depth. Often that is the best way to improve your ability to express yourself in English.

センテンス２と３は普通の「thanks」という単語の意味と否定的かもしれない。自分の常に知っている単語をもっと深く勉強したほうがいいと思います。自分の英語での表現力を向上させるのにそういう勉強方法は非常に効果的です。

「Thank you」が入る表現

Hello! Just yesterday I attended a party welcoming a new teacher to one of the schools where I teach. The party was very well organized, catered well, and with karaoke for entertainment. The organizers even prepared speeches in English. In one of those speeches I heard a very common mistake using the expression “thank you,” so I would like to discuss that expression as well as some others using this very important phrase.

こんにちは！昨日私が教えている学校の新しい教員の歓迎会パーティーがありました。そのパーティーは大変うまく企画が立てられ、ケータリングもよかったし、食事の後はカラオケの楽しみがありました。司会の方も英語のスピーチを用意しました。そのスピーチの中でよくある間違いを聞いたので、その間違いや大変大事な「thank you」という表現の使い方を説明したいと思います。

First, please listen to the following sentence and see if you notice the mistake.

まず、次の例文を聞いて間違いはどういうところでしょうか？

Sentence 1: Thank you for your coming today!

Did you catch the mistake? The word “your” is not needed. Let’s listen to the correct sentence.

この間違いは気づいたでしょうか？この例文の中で単語の「your」は必要ありません。次は正しい例文を聞きましょう。

Sentence 2: Thank you for coming today!

センテンス２：今日来てくれて、ありがとうございました！

The point is that to thank someone for an “action” you should say the action as a verb in present progressive form after “Thank you for…” To thank someone for giving you a “thing” you can simply put the noun for that thing after “Thank you for…” The next example sentence could be used after a guest brings a bottle of wine to your dinner party.

ここのポイントは誰かの行動に関してお礼を言いたい時は[Thank you for…]の後にその行動の動詞を現在進行形にして入れます。誰かが自分に物をくれたりする時は「Thank you for…」の後でその物の名詞を入れれば良いです。自分の家のディナーパーティーにお客さんがワインを持って来てくれれば次の例文が使えます。

Sentence 3: Thank you for the wine!

センテンス３：ワインを持って来てくれて、ありがとうございました！

Hello! Today I would like to discuss a very useful verb: the verb "spend." This verb can be used to talk about the "use" of both time and money. こんにちは！今日は大変便利な動詞を紹介したいと思います。これは動詞の「ｓｐｅｎｄ」です。この動詞はよくお金と時間の「使用」について話す時に使います。この動詞は日本語の動詞の「費やす」という動詞に一番近いと思います。そして、「エネルギー」の使い方を表す「ｅｘｐｅｎｄ」という動詞も説明したいと思います。下にこの動詞を使う例文があります。

Sentence 1: How are you going to spend your summer vacation？

センテンス１：夏休みはどういうふうに過ごしますか？

Sentence 2: I spent over two hundred dollars last night!

センテンス２：昨日の夜２００ドルも使ってしまった！

Sentence 3: He expended a lot of energy to pass the bar exam.

センテンス３：彼は司法試験を合格するためにたくさんのエネルギーを使った　（つまりよくがんばった）

Sentence 1: Maybe I’ll go fly fishing on Sunday.

センテンス１：多分日曜日はフライフィッシングしに行きます。

Sentence 2: I guess I’ll go fly fishing on Sunday.

センテンス２：日曜日にフライフィッシングしに行くと思います。

Sentence 3: I probably won’t go fly fishing on Sunday.

センテンス３：日曜日にフライフィッシングはしに行かないと思います。

Sentence 3 is a negative sentence because we can be uncertain but think that we will not do something. I hope you understand how to use the future tense better. These expressions should help you when you are asking people what they will do during summer vacations.

センテンス３は否定形になります。否定形を使うと「多分しないだろう」という意味になります。この説明によって未来系の使い方がもっと分かるようになったでしょうか。これから夏の休みについて聞く時に役立つと思います。

未来系の「going to」と「will」

Hello! Today I would like to present a simple explanation of when to use different forms of the future tense. Today we will be discussing the use of “will” and “going to” to express future tense. For a plan which is certain we use “going to” and then for plans which are uncertain we use “will.” Please notice the use of adverbs such as “probably” and the verb “guess” to express uncertainty.

Hello! Today I would like to continue with the theme of encouraging people by offering words of encouragement. So, to that end, I want to present some expressions we can use to cheer up friends when things are not going well. So, here they are!

Many people hang their heads when they are losing confidence. So, this expression tells people to not lose their confidence.

大体の人は気持ちが落ち込んでいると頭も下がるということもあると思います。この表現を使えば友達に「自信を失くさないで」ということが言えます。

Sentence3: Stick in there!

センテンス３：　あきらめないでね！

I hope you find these expressions helpful when you need to encourage your friends. Everybody gets down every once in awhile, especially during the rainy season!

Hello! Today I would like to discuss some words of praise for a very common form of performance. It is very common to listen to business presentations or speeches, so I would like to discuss things we can say to express our interest in someone’s talk. Let’s take a look at some expressions.

Sentence 1: I really enjoyed your talk!

センテンス１：あなたのスピーチをとってもエンジョイしました！

Sentence 2: Thank you for an interesting presentation!

センテンス２：大変面白いプレゼンテーションをしていただいて、どうもありがとうございました。

Sentence 3: I was particularly interested in the part about your company’s founding.

センテンス３：私は特に会社の設立に関する部分に興味がありました。

We use Sentence 3 to tell a speaker that we had particular interest in one section of a presentation. After that, we can ask a question about that section if we wish to.

センテンス３という表現を使うことによって、スピーチのある部分に特に興味があったということが言えます。それから、その部分について質問することができます。

Sentence 2 is typically used if your team is losing.

センテンス２はよく自分のチームが負けている時に使います。

Sentence3: C’mon Matsui!

センテンス３：　松井、がんばれ！

If you want to cheer for one player then Sentence 3 is probably best. I hope you will use these expressions if you go to see a sporting event abroad. Have fun!

一人の選手を応援したい時はセンテンス３を使ったほうがいいと思います。海外にいる間スポーツの試合見に行ったら、こういう表現を使ってみてください。楽しんでください！

もっとニューヨーク！！

一週間のごぶさたでした。みなさん梅雨のなか、ごきげんいかがでしょうか？今週もしつこくニューヨークをひっぱります。私がアメリカに行くときに、気分を盛り上げるために必ず買う雑誌があります。それも超ミーハーな、New York と Vanity Fair でございます。New York誌はときどき間違われるのですが、あの格調高いNew Yorker とは違いますのであしからず。

そういう雑誌に何が書いてあるかというと、いわゆる日々の話題なのです。ニューヨークのジモティたちの文化的、風俗的環境を知るのに一番手っ取り早いのと、楽しいということがあります。

特にNew York誌の、BOOK、MOVIE、THEATER、MUSIC、ART、TVなどのコラムは、毎週特徴のある批評が楽しみです。

私が特に好きなのは、FOODとBEST BETSの記事です。FOODSはたいていそのときに話題になっているレストランが紹介されることが多いです。BEST BETSはそのとき一番買うべき商品の紹介といったところでしょうか。買えるかどうかは別問題ですが。

このコラムでもよく紹介されますが、日本の食材や料理は、いまやもっともおしゃれなアイテムになっていて、若者に人気のファッショナブルな一般のレストランでも、横文字のメニューのなかに必ずSUSHIとかSASHIMIとかあって、びっくりします。

たとえばNew York誌のFOODのコラムでのおすすめは、

Japanese inspired appetizers and entrees like yuzu chicken and kelp-cured black cod.（ゆず風味のチキンや黒ダラの昆布じめのように日本食の影響を受けた前菜やアントレ）

だって！　それをまた、Beyond-ramen menu（ラーメンを超えたメニュー）と謳っております。

いやはやびっくり。すでにニューヨークではramenは小文字で書くほど当たり前のように使われる英語になりました。

もうこれで終わりにしますが、ニューヨークの街でもっともたくさん目にするのが、言わずとしれたStarbucks（スタバ）のコーヒーショップとDuane Reade （デュエイン・レイド）というドラッグストアです。

ここでひとこと言わせて。

You find Starbucks and Duane Reade on practically every block in New York!

ブラボー！最高！

Hello! How was your weekend? Yesterday I went to a music recital party organized by some friends. It was a lot of fun to perform. I sang a song with my wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law to make it a true “family affair.” So, today I would like to continue with our theme of congratulating people and apply it to cheering the musicians at a music concert. One interesting aspect is that many of these expressions have been borrowed from foreign languages and are used in these situations in English. First, I will tell you about cheers for a more formal classical concert.

こんにちは！今週末はどうでしたか？昨日私は友達が仕掛けた音楽演奏パーティーに行きました。パフォーマンスするのも楽しいですね！私は妻と義理のお姉さんと義理の弟さんと一緒に歌っていました。それで本当の「家族グループ」になりました。「Family affair」 というのは家族のメンバーが一団になってやる活動のことです。というわけで、今日はおめでたい時の表現というテーマを続けて、コンサートで言う表現を説明したいと思います。ここで一つの面白いことがあります。こういう場面で使う表現は外国語から来る表現が多いです。まず、もっとフォーマルなクラシック音楽のコンサートの時の表現を説明します。

Sentence 1: Bravo!

センテンス１：　ブラボー！

This expression actually comes from “bravo” which is the Italian word for “brave” but is simply used to express one’s enjoyment to the performer.

この単語はイタリア語で「勇敢な」という意味になります。しかし、英語でミュージシャンをほめるための言葉になります。（おそらくイタリア語でもそうだと思います）

Sentence 2: Encore!

センテンス２：　アンコール！

This expression comes from the French word “encore” which means “again.” Therefore, it is used to ask the performer to play one more song after he/she has left the stage.

この単語はフランス語で「もう一度」という意味になります。だから、ミュージシャンがステージから出た後、もう一曲演奏してもらいたい時に使います。

Of course, there are expressions for applauding a musician at more casual concerts like a rock concert. Many of these have made their way into use in Japan. Let’s look at a few.

もちろん、ロックコンサートでも似てる表現があります。この表現も日本では珍しくないと思います。

Sentence 3: Yeeeeaaaahhhh!

センテンス３：最高ー！

This is simply the word “yeah” yelled in a an exultant manner. Probably more appropriate for harder music, e.g. rock.

この表現でyes yeah を使ってミュージシャン達を快く応援します。こういう表現はハード系の音楽とロックに合うと思います。

Sentence 4: Wooooo!

センテンス４：イェエエ！

This is an exclamation which is does not come from a word. It is uttered with a little more relaxed enthusiasm than Sentence 3 and therefore probably more appropriate for a rock ballad or soul song.

この表現は単語から来ていないです。センテンス３よりはもうちょっと落ち着いた気持ちで表現すると思うので、ロックのバラードやソールの曲が終わった後はこの表現を使ったほうがいいかもしれません。

Sentence 5: Encore! Encore! Encore! Encore!

センテンス５：　アンコール！アンコール！アンコール！アンコール！

This is the same expression as Sentence 2 above, but it is expressed with more vigor for the more casual setting of a rock concert. I hope you enjoyed today’s lesson. Please try to use these expressions next time you go out to a concert!

Hello! On Monday we learned some expressions for giving people congratulations in many different situations. Well, today I would like to focus on some expressions for giving congratulations in different business situations. We will use the same “Congratulations on your ___________!” structure. So, here are the expressions!

こんにちは！ 月曜日にいろいろな場面でだれかにお祝いの気持ちを表す表現を勉強しました。今日はビジネスのいろいろな場面にお祝いの表現を説明したいと思います。今回も前勉強した「Congratulations on your __________!」という表現を使います。さて、次はそのための表現になります。

Sentence 1: Congratulations on your new job!

センテンス１:　良いお仕事見つけられて、おめでとうございます！

Sentence 2: Congratulations on your promotion!

センテンス２:　ご昇進おめでとうございます！

Sentence3: Congratulations on getting the new account!

センテンス３：　いい取引先が見つかり、よかったですね！

In Sentence 3, I am introducing a new structure. Here we can substitute the gerund form of the verb to act as a noun after the preposition “on.” I hope these expressions are useful to you in your working life! Good luck!

Hello! How was your weekend? Yesterday I went to a party to celebrate a graduation, three birthdays, and father’s day for two people. It can be difficult to get together with families, so I think it’s pretty common to have such celebrations. Therefore, today I would like to talk about some expressions for giving congratulations to people in different situations.

こんにちは！今週末はどうでしたか？昨日私は一人の卒業と三人の誕生日と二人の父の日のお祝いのためのパーティーに行きました。家族が集まるのってなかなかないから、こういうふうにお祝いするのって珍しくないと思います。今日はいろいろな時に人に「おめでとう！」というための表現を説明したいと思います。

The two expressions which we use are “Happy __________!” or “Congratulations on your __________!” In each case the occasion or event is put in the blank. Please notice the use of the preposition “on” after “Congratulations.” Let’s look at some examples!

大体二つの表現が使えます。その二つは「Happy __________!」と「Congratulations on your __________!」になります。この表現の空白のところにお祝いのイベントの名前を入れれば完成することができます。「Congratulations」の後に「on」という前置詞が使われているのことに注意しましょう。さて、いろいろな例文を見ましょう！

Sentence 1: Happy birthday!

センテンス１：お誕生日、おめでとうございます！

Sentence 2: Happy Anniversary!

センテンス２：結婚記念日おめでとうございます！（直訳になってしまいます。）

Sentence 3: Congratulations on your graduation!

センテンス３：卒業、おめでとうございます！

Sentence 4: Congratulations on your wedding!

センテンス４：ご結婚、おめでとうございます！

“Congratulations” is used for more occasions than “happy.” Simply put a noun after “Congratulations on your __________!” and it can be used for any occasion. Try it out next time you want to give congratulations to a friend!

「Congratulations」の表現が「happy」より多く使われています。「Congratulations on your __________!」の空白のところにお祝いするイベントの名前を名詞で入れるとどの時でも使えると思います。今度自分の友達に「おめでとう！」と言ってあげたい時にどうぞ使ってみてください！

（Aが月曜日に出した質問、Bがその受け答えの例です。）

A: How long have you been working at your company?

B: I have been working at Sony for 12 years.

A: どれくらい今の会社で働いていますか？

B: 私は１２年間ソニーで働いています。

Please notice that we use the preposition “for” before a period of time.

この文章の中で働いている期間の前に前置詞の「for」を使うことに注目してください。

A: What does your company do?

B: My company produces electronics.

A: あなたの会社はどんなビジネスをしていますか？

B: 私の会社は電気製品を生産しています。

In this case the most common verb is “produce” for the production of a product. For the service industry, the verb is usually provide as in:

会社の活動を説明すると、製品を作っている会社には「produce」という動詞が適切だと思います。サービス業の会社の場合は大体「provide」という動詞を使います。次の例文を読んでみてください。

Sentence 1: “Citibank provides investment services.”
センテンス１：　「シティーバンクは金融サービスを提供しています。」

というような表現になります。

さて、最後の表現です。

A: How is business?

B: Pretty good.

A: 仕事の調子はどうですか？

B: まあまあ。

This answer is also used frequently in response to the question, “How are you?”
この答えは質問の「お元気ですか？」に対してもよく使われています。

Hello! This week I would like to continue with some business English. The expressions will be a little more advanced than last week. I will present the questions, so please try to answer them. Then, I will teach you the way to answer on Thursday. Here we go!

Sentence A: How long have you been working at your company?

センテンスA:　どれくらい今の会社で働いていますか？

Sentence B: What does your company do?

センテンスB:　あなたの会社はどんなビジネスをしていますか？

Sentence C: How is business?

センテンスC：　仕事の調子はどうですか？

仕事について答える！

Hello Talklers! Today, I will help you respond to the questions I gave you on Monday. Of course, there are a variety of answers, but I hope that this will be a good guide for you in learning how to answer.

こんにちは、トークラーズ！今日は、今週月曜日の記事の質問の答え方を説明したいと思います。もちろん、いろいろな答えがあるんですが、今日のレッスンはこういう会話のガイドになればいいと思っています。

A: What company do you work for?
B: I work for Sony.

A: あなたはどの会社に勤めていますか？
B: 私はソニーに勤めています。

A: Where do you work?
B: I work in the New York office.

A: （場所は）どこで働いていますか？
B: ニューヨーク支店で働いています。

In the two conversations above, please pay attention to the prepositions used: “for” and “in.”

上の二つの会話の中で前置詞の「for」と「in」を忘れないでください。

A: What is your job?
B: I am a marketing manager.

A: お仕事は何ですか？
B: 私はマーケティング部長です。

In the answer don’t forget to use “a” which indicates that there are many people with the same position in the business world.

答えの中で「a」を忘れないでください。「a」を使うとビジネスの世界の中で同じ職を持っている人は何人もいるという意味が伝わります。

Hello! Today I would like to give you expressions for asking about work. Try to answer the questions about yourself and next time I will give you the expressions for responses. So, let’s try it!

A: What company do you work for?

Ａ：　あなたはどの会社に勤めていますか？

B: Where do you work?

Ｂ：　（場所は）どこで働いていますか？

C: What is your job?

Ｃ：　お仕事は何ですか？

These are the most basic questions, but I am sure that you will find them useful.

これは基本の表現です。しかし、きっと役立つと思います。

NYCのデリー会話に飛び込め！（２）

Hello! Today I would like to discuss more about “Deli English.” In the previous lesson I gave you expressions that a deli counter person in New York City might use. This time I would like to teach you how to respond to those expressions. So, here are the expressions and responses.

こんにちは！今日は「デリー英語」についてもっと説明したいと思います。この前のレッスンの中でニューヨークのデリーのカウンターで働いている人が使う表現を勉強しましたね。今回その表現に対する返事を説明したいと思います。下にその表現と返事が書いてあります。

A: Next on line!
B: Yes. I’ll take a Clinton and an NYPD.

A: 次！
B: はい。「クリントン」と「ＮＹＰＤ」くれ。

ちなみに、「Clinton」、以前大統領だったビル、と「NYPD」、ニューヨークの警察の省略は私が大好きなデリーのサンドの名前になります。コロンビア大学の近く、Amsterdam and 116th にあるので、行ってみてください。

A: Soup ‘er Salad?
B: Gimme soup.

A: スープそれともサラダ？
B: スープくれ。

Do not use “please” in a New York deli. It sounds too formal and polite.
ニューヨークのデリーで「please」は使わなくていいです。硬すぎるのです。

A: To stay or to go?
B: To go.

A: 店内それともお持ち帰り？
B: お持ち帰り。

“Deli English” is very casual. It expresses the busy pace of New York City life. Take a trip to New York and speak like the locals!

デリー英語は大変カジュアルです。ニューヨーク生活の忙しいペースをよく表してると思います。ニューヨークに旅して、ニューヨーカーのように喋ってみてください。

NYCのデリー会話に飛び込め！

Hello! I have just returned from a trip to New York. Therefore, I would like to discuss a few expressions which are unique to the New York area, and more specifically unique to one New York institution: the deli. So, let's begin!

こんにちは！ 私はニューヨークから帰って来たばかりです。だから、ニューヨーク、特にニューヨークの有名なデリーというレストラン、のユニークな表現を説明したいと思います。さて、始めましょう！

A: Next on line!

A: 次！（次並んでいるお客さん、ご注文をどうぞ！）

This expression is used by the deli counter person to ask for the next person's order. The pace in a deli is fast, so the expressions are short. However, in most places in the US, you would hear the following:

デリーのカウンターで働いている人はこの表現を使います。次の人の注文を受け取る時に使います。デリーの仕事のペースは非常に速いので、話す言葉はわりと短いです。しかし、アメリカの殆どの地域ではセンテンスBの言い方になります。

B: Next in line!
B: 次！（次並んでいるお客さん、ご注文をどうぞ！）

The preposition "in" becomes "on" in New York.　

前置詞の「in」がニューヨークでは「on」になります。

C: To stay or to go?

C: 店内？お持ち帰り？

"To stay" means to "stay" and eat in the restaurant. "To go" means to "go" out of the restaurant and bring your food with you.

「To stay」はレストランに「残って」食べるという意味です。「To go」というのはレストランから出て「行って」食べ物を持ち出すという意味です。

D:　Soup 'er salad? (Soup or salad?)

D:　スープそれともサラダ？

Many people, even native speakers, are confused by this expression and think it means "super salad" as in "super market" or big store. However, the counter person is asking you what side item you want with your order.

この表現はネイティブの人にもわかりにくい表現です。よく「super salad」、いわば「ラージサラダ」という聞き間違いをするのです。しかし、この言い方によってデリーのカウンターで働いている人はセットメニューについて来る注文を聞いています。

New York is a common travel destination for many Japanese, so I hope you will visit a deli and experience deli culture in New York. I am sure that you will hear these expressions.

ニューヨークは日本人にとって、よく行く旅行先だと思うので、今度ニューヨークを訪ねる時にデリーに入って「デリー文化」を味わって欲しいですね！食べ物もね！きっとこの表現は耳に入ってくると思います。
